Abstract: Summary: The copper-catalyzed Huisgen reaction as a typical example of click chemistry was realized with the polysaccharide cellulose for the first time The generality, selectivity, and the efficiency of click chemistry perfectly fit the requirements of polysaccharide modification, which is demonstrated by the introduction of triazole-spacer bound functional groups, ie, carboxylic ester, thiophene, and aniline moieties Azide moieties introduced into cellulose via the tosyl derivative were simply transferred with ethynyl compounds under Cu(I) catalysis and mild and easily applicable conditions Hydrolytically stable cellulose derivatives soluble in organic solvents, eg, DMSO or DMF with DS up to 09 are obtained The triazole substituted cellulose derivatives were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopies and show no impurities or substructures resulting from side reactions 6-Azido-6-deoxy cellulose

Abstract: We experimentally investigate light propagation in a disordered two-dimensional array of mutually coupled optical fibers. In the linear case light either spreads in a diffusive manner or localizes at a few sites. For high excitation power diffusive spreading is arrested by the focusing nonlinearity, i.e., forming a discrete soliton. By contrast, fields, which are localized in the linear regime, can experience both spreading and contraction caused by the nonlinearity.

Abstract: Candida albicans and C. glabrata are the two most common pathogenic yeasts of humans, yet they are phylogenetically, genetically and phenotypically very different. In this review, we compare and contrast the strategies of C. albicans and C. glabrata to attach to and invade into the host, obtain nutrients and evade the host immune response. Although their strategies share some basic concepts, they differ greatly in their outcome. While C. albicans follows an aggressive strategy to subvert the host response and to obtain nutrients for its survival, C. glabrata seems to have evolved a strategy which is based on stealth, evasion and persistence, without causing severe damage in murine models. However, both fungi are successful as commensals and as pathogens of humans. Understanding these strategies will help in finding novel ways to fight Candida, and fungal infections in general.
