Abstract: Plate tectonics is based on the concept of rigid lithosphere plates sliding on a mechanically weak asthenosphere. Many models assume that the weakness of the asthenosphere is related to the presence of small amounts of hydrous melts. However, the mechanism that may cause melting in the asthenosphere is not well understood. We show that the asthenosphere coincides with a zone where the water solubility in mantle minerals has a pronounced minimum. The minimum is due to a sharp decrease of water solubility in aluminous orthopyroxene with depth, whereas the water solubility in olivine continuously increases with pressure. Melting in the asthenosphere may therefore be related not to volatile enrichment but to a minimum in water solubility, which causes excess water to form a hydrous silicate melt.

Abstract: Inkjet printing represents a solution dispensing technique that is characterized by its non-contact, material-efficient and reproducible processing. This critical review discusses the use of inkjet printing for organic electronics with a focus on the applicability as well as the drying behavior. The nascent inkjet printing technique is compared to commonly used solution deposition methods, like spin-coating and doctor blading. Basic drying principles of inkjet printed features are understood and fundamental correlations between processing properties and film characteristics can be drawn. It is, however, a long way to gain a full understanding of the complete drying process, since the process conditions as well as the ink properties correlate in a complex relation with the final device properties. Nevertheless, inkjet printing has the potential to evolve as one of the most promising film preparation techniques in the future and has already been applied successfully in combinatorial screening workflows and for the preparation of organic solar cell devices.

TL;DR: Large progress of mechanical and functional properties of self-assembled polymer/nanoclay nacre-mimetics are demonstrated by using synthetic nanoclays with aspect ratios covering three orders in magnitude, and comprehensive relationships among structure formation, nanostructuration, deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties as a function of nanoclay aspect ratio are established.
Abstract: Nacre-mimetics hold great promise as high-performance, functional materials. Here, the authors use synthetic nanoclays and demonstrate tuneable mechanical properties by varying the nanoclay aspect ratio, and suggest a transparent gas barrier application.
