TL;DR: In addition to patient characteristics, medication‐related variables, and reasons for nonadherence, patient‐reported symptoms and medication side effects were significantly associated with adherence to HAART.
Abstract: Objectives To identify variables predictive of nonadherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and to assess whether self-reported symptoms or medication side effects are related to adherence. Design Cross-sectional multicenter study Adherence Italian Cohort Naive Antiretrovirals [AdICONA] within the Italian Cohort Naive Antiretrovirals (ICONA). Methods Participants receiving HAART completed a 16-item self-administered questionnaire to assess nonadherence in the last 3 days as well as the type and intensity of 24 common HIV- and HAART-related symptoms experienced during the last 4 weeks. Results From May 1999 to March 2000, 358 persons were enrolled: 22% reported nonadherence and were less likely to have HIV RNA Conclusions In addition to patient characteristics, medication-related variables, and reasons for nonadherence, patient-reported symptoms and medication side effects were significantly associated with adherence to HAART.

TL;DR: It is shown that radiation pressure can be profitably used to entangle macroscopic oscillators like movable mirrors, using present technology and a new sufficient criterion for entanglement is proved, which is robust against thermal noise.
Abstract: It is shown that radiation pressure can be profitably used to entangle macroscopic oscillators like movable mirrors, using present technology. We prove a new sufficient criterion for entanglement and show that the achievable entanglement is robust against thermal noise. Its signature can be revealed using common optomechanical readout apparatus.

TL;DR: In this paper, four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM).
Abstract: The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of “benchmark” models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. These interpretations lead in all cases to large exclusions in the MSSM parameter space. Absolute limits are set on the parameter cosβ and, in some scenarios, on the masses of neutral Higgs bosons.

TL;DR: A range of lifestyle factors and underlying medical conditions are associated with an increased risk of CAP in European adults, and the presence of comorbid conditions including chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, dementia, dysphagia, HIV or chronic renal or liver disease all increased the risk.
Abstract: Background Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) causes considerable morbidity and mortality in adults, particularly in the elderly. Methods Structured searches of PubMed were conducted to identify up-to-date information on the incidence of CAP in adults in Europe, as well as data on lifestyle and medical risk factors for CAP. Results The overall annual incidence of CAP in adults ranged between 1.07 to 1.2 per 1000 person-years and 1.54 to 1.7 per 1000 population and increased with age (14 per 1000 person-years in adults aged ≥65 years). Incidence was also higher in men than in women and in patients with chronic respiratory disease or HIV infection. Lifestyle factors associated with an increased risk of CAP included smoking, alcohol abuse, being underweight, having regular contact with children and poor dental hygiene. The presence of comorbid conditions, including chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dementia, dysphagia, HIV or chronic renal or liver disease all increased the risk of CAP by twofold to fourfold. Conclusion A range of lifestyle factors and underlying medical conditions are associated with an increased risk of CAP in European adults. Understanding of the types of individual at greatest risk of CAP can help to ensure that interventions to reduce the risk of infection and burden of disease are targeted appropriately.
