Abstract: Maize (Zea mays), also called corn, is believed to have originated in central Mexico 7000 years ago from a wild grass, and Native Americans transformed maize into a better source of food. Maize contains approximately 72% starch, 10% protein, and 4% fat, supplying an energy density of 365 Kcal/100 g and is grown throughout the world, with the United States, China, and Brazil being the top three maize-producing countries in the world, producing approximately 563 of the 717 million metric tons/year. Maize can be processed into a variety of food and industrial products, including starch, sweeteners, oil, beverages, glue, industrial alcohol, and fuel ethanol. In the last 10 years, the use of maize for fuel production significantly increased, accounting for approximately 40% of the maize production in the United States. As the ethanol industry absorbs a larger share of the maize crop, higher prices for maize will intensify demand competition and could affect maize prices for animal and human consumption. Low production costs, along with the high consumption of maize flour and cornmeal, especially where micronutrient deficiencies are common public health problems, make this food staple an ideal food vehicle for fortification.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies show that high temperatures are related to mortality, but little is known about the exposure-response function and the lagged effect of heat. We report the associations between daily maximum apparent temperature and daily deaths during the warm season in 15 European cities. METHODS: The city-specific analyses were based on generalized estimating equations and the city-specific results were combined in a Bayesian random effects meta-analysis. We specified distributed lag models in studying the delayed effect of exposure. Time-varying coefficient models were used to check the assumption of a constant heat effect over the warm season. RESULTS: The city-specific exposure-response functions have a V shape, with a change-point that varied among cities. The meta-analytic estimate of the threshold was 29.4 degrees C for Mediterranean cities and 23.3 degrees C for north-continental cities. The estimated overall change in all natural mortality associated with a 1 degrees C increase in maximum apparent temperature above the city-specific threshold was 3.12% (95% credibility interval = 0.60% to 5.72%) in the Mediterranean region and 1.84% (0.06% to 3.64%) in the north-continental region. Stronger associations were found between heat and mortality from respiratory diseases, and with mortality in the elderly. CONCLUSIONS: There is an important mortality effect of heat across Europe. The effect is evident from June through August; it is limited to the first week following temperature excess, with evidence of mortality displacement. There is some suggestion of a higher effect of early season exposures. Acclimatization and individual susceptibility need further investigation as possible explanations for the observed heterogeneity among cities.

Abstract: Summary: To date, most Leishmania and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection cases reported to WHO come from Southern Europe. Up to the year 2001, nearly 2,000 cases of coinfection were identified, of which 90% were from Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal. However, these figures are misleading because they do not account for the large proportion of cases in many African and Asian countries that are missed due to a lack of diagnostic facilities and poor reporting systems. Most cases of coinfection in the Americas are reported in Brazil, where the incidence of leishmaniasis has spread in recent years due to overlap with major areas of HIV transmission. In some areas of Africa, the number of coinfection cases has increased dramatically due to social phenomena such as mass migration and wars. In northwest Ethiopia, up to 30% of all visceral leishmaniasis patients are also infected with HIV. In Asia, coinfections are increasingly being reported in India, which also has the highest global burden of leishmaniasis and a high rate of resistance to antimonial drugs. Based on the previous experience of 20 years of coinfection in Europe, this review focuses on the management of Leishmania-HIV-coinfected patients in low-income countries where leishmaniasis is endemic.

Abstract: ContextLittle is known about the impact of trauma in postconflict, low-income
countries where people have survived multiple traumatic experiences.ObjectiveTo establish the prevalence rates of and risk factors for posttraumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) in 4 postconflict, low-income countries.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsEpidemiological survey conducted between 1997 and 1999 among survivors
of war or mass violence (aged ≥16 years) who were randomly selected from
community populations in Algeria (n = 653), Cambodia (n = 610), Ethiopia (n
= 1200), and Gaza (n = 585).Main Outcome MeasurePrevalence rates of PTSD, assessed using the PTSD module of the Composite
International Diagnostic Interview version 2.1 and evaluated in relation to
traumatic events, assessed using an adapted version of the Life Events and
Social History Questionnaire.ResultsThe prevalence rate of assessed PTSD was 37.4% in Algeria, 28.4% in
Cambodia, 15.8% in Ethiopia, and 17.8% in Gaza. Conflict-related trauma after
age 12 years was the only risk factor for PTSD that was present in all 4 samples.
Torture was a risk factor in all samples except Cambodia. Psychiatric history
and current illness were risk factors in Cambodia (adjusted odds ratio [OR],
3.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.3-5.4 and adjusted OR,1.6; 95% CI, 1.0-2.7,
respectively) and Ethiopia (adjusted OR, 3.9; 95% CI, 2.0-7.4 and adjusted
OR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1-2.7, respectively). Poor quality of camp was associated
with PTSD in Algeria (adjusted OR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.3-2.5) and in Gaza (adjusted
OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1-2.8). Daily hassles were associated with PTSD in Algeria
(adjusted OR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.4). Youth domestic stress, death or separation
in the family, and alcohol abuse in parents were associated with PTSD in Cambodia
(adjusted OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1-2.6; adjusted OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.0-2.8; and
adjusted OR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.1-4.4, respectively).ConclusionsUsing the same assessment methods, a wide range of rates of symptoms
of PTSD were found among 4 low-income populations who have experienced war,
conflict, or mass violence. We identified specific patterns of risk factors
per country. Our findings indicate the importance of contextual differences
in the study of traumatic stress and human rights violations.

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has recently emerged as a new human disease, resulting globally in 435 deaths from 6,234 probable cases (as of 3 May 2003). Here we provide proof from experimental infection of cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that the newly discovered SARS-associated coronavirus (SCV) is the aetiological agent of this disease. Our understanding of the aetiology of SARS will expedite the development of diagnostic tests, antiviral therapies and vaccines, and may allow a more concise case definition for this emerging disease.
