TLDR
In this paper, the authors define a leadership event as a perceived segment of action whose meaning is created by the interactions of actors involved in producing it, and present a set of innovative methods for capturing and analyzing these contextually driven processes.
Abstract
Traditional, hierarchical views of leadership are less and less useful given the complexities of our modern world. Leadership theory must transition to new perspectives that account for the complex adaptive needs of organizations. In this paper, we propose that leadership (as opposed to leaders) can be seen as a complex dynamic process that emerges in the interactive “spaces between” people and ideas. That is, leadership is a dynamic that transcends the capabilities of individuals alone; it is the product of interaction, tension, and exchange rules governing changes in perceptions and understanding. We label this a dynamic of adaptive leadership, and we show how this dynamic provides important insights about the nature of leadership and its outcomes in organizational fields. We define a leadership event as a perceived segment of action whose meaning is created by the interactions of actors involved in producing it, and we present a set of innovative methods for capturing and analyzing these contextually driven processes. We provide theoretical and practical implications of these ideas for organizational behavior and organization and management theory.

The evolution of cooperation in strategic alliances: Initial conditions or learning processes?

TL;DR: Analysis of the evolution of strategic alliances helps transcend too simple depictions of inertia and adaptation by suggesting that initial conditions may lead to a stable 'imprinting' of fixed processes that make alliances highly inertial or to generative and evolutionary processes that makes them highly adaptive, depending on how they are set.

The dynamics of product innovation and firm competences

TL;DR: This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences through field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification.

Provisional Selves: Experimenting with Image and Identity in Professional Adaptation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe how people adapt to new roles by experimenting with provisional selves that serve as trials for possible but not yet fully elaborated professional identities, and how people experiment with different identities in different contexts.

Institutional Evolution and Change: Environmentalism and the U.S. Chemical Industry

TL;DR: This paper measured changes in the constituency of an organizational field centered around the issue of corporate environmentalism in the period 1960-93, correlating those changes with the institutes that supported them.

The Constitution of Society. Outline of the Theory of Structuration

TL;DR: Giddens as discussed by the authors has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
