Clinical and endoscopic characteristics do not reliably differentiate PPI-responsive esophageal eosinophilia and eosinophilic esophagitis in patients undergoing upper endoscopy: a prospective cohort study.

TLDR
Although EoE was seen in nearly a quarter of patients with dysphagia, PPI-REE was almost as common, and accounted for over one-third of those with ≥15 eos/hpf, and none were significantly associated with disease status on multivariable analysis.

Updated International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Proceedings of the AGREE Conference.

Evan S. Dellon, +65 more
- 01 Oct 2018 -
TL;DR: An updated diagnostic algorithm for EoE was developed, with removal of the PPI trial requirement, and the evidence suggests that PPIs are better classified as a treatment for esophageal eosinophilia that may be due to EOE than as a diagnostic criterion.

Presentation and Epidemiology of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

TL;DR: There is substantial overlap between symptoms of GERD and those of eosinophilic esophagitis, functional dyspepsia, and gastroparesis, posing a challenge for patient management.

Efficacy of Proton Pump Inhibitor Drugs for Inducing Clinical and Histologic Remission in Patients With Symptomatic Esophageal Eosinophilia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

TL;DR: PPI therapy induces clinicohistologic remission in half of patients with symptomatic esophageal eosinophilia, and this finding should be interpreted with caution because of poor-quality evidence, heterogeneity, and publication bias.

Eosinophilic esophagitis in children and adults: a systematic review and consensus recommendations for diagnosis and treatment.

Histopathologic variability and endoscopic correlates in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis.

TL;DR: Significant histologic variability exists among biopsy specimens from individual patients with EE and necessitates multiple biopsies to improve diagnostic sensitivity, and marked variability within and between biopsy specimen of individual patients is revealed.

Association of eosinophilic inflammation with esophageal food impaction in adults.

TL;DR: Clinopathologic features of adults with esophageal food impaction evaluated demonstrated increased CD8 lymphocytes and major basic protein deposition in their squamous epithelium, indicating a significant number likely have eosinophilic esophagitis.
