TLDR
In this paper, an updated procedure for calculating reference and crop evapotranspiration from meteorological data and crop coefficients is presented, based on the FAO Penman-Monteith method.Abstract:
(First edition: 1998, this reprint: 2004). This publication presents an updated procedure for calculating reference and crop evapotranspiration from meteorological data and crop coefficients. The procedure, first presented in FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 24, Crop water requirements, in 1977, allows estimation of the amount of water used by a crop, taking into account the effect of the climate and the crop characteristics. The publication incorporates advances in research and more accurate procedures for determining crop water use as recommended by a panel of high-level experts organised by FAO in May 1990. The first part of the guidelines includes procedures for determining reference crop evapotranspiration according to the FAO Penman-Monteith method. These are followed by updated procedures for estimating the evapotranspiration of different crops for different growth stages and ecological conditions.read more

On the conservative behavior of biomass water productivity
TL;DR: In this paper, a stepwise scaling up approach, from leaf to canopy, is undertaken to underline the processes involved at different hierarchical levels of biological organization that lead to the conservative behavior of WPb.

Large contribution from anthropogenic warming to an emerging North American megadrought.
A. Park Williams,Edward R. Cook,Jason E. Smerdon,Benjamin I. Cook,Benjamin I. Cook,John T. Abatzoglou,John T. Abatzoglou,Kasey Bolles,Seung H. Baek,Seung H. Baek,Andrew M. Badger,Andrew M. Badger,Andrew M. Badger,Ben Livneh,Ben Livneh +14 more
TL;DR: The megadrought-like trajectory of 2000–2018 soil moisture was driven by natural variability superimposed on drying due to anthropogenic warming, which pushed an otherwise moderate drought onto a trajectory comparable to the worst SWNA megadroughts since 800 CE.

Assessment of inundation changes of Poyang Lake using MODIS observations between 2000 and 2010
Lian Feng,Lian Feng,Chuanmin Hu,Xiaoling Chen,Xiaoling Chen,Xiaobin Cai,Liqiao Tian,Wenxia Gan +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the short and long-term characteristics of lake inundation and found significant seasonality and inter-annual variability in the monthly and annual mean inundation areas.

Increasing streamflow and baseflow in Mississippi River since the 1940 s: Effect of land use change
TL;DR: In this paper, a trend of increasing streamflow has been observed in the Mississippi River (MR) basin since the 1940s as a result of increased precipitation and agricultural land use change in the MR basin.

The blue, green and grey water footprint of rice from production and consumption perspectives
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors made a global assessment of the green, blue and grey water footprint of rice, using a higher spatial resolution and local data on actual irrigation, and estimated the national water footprint using international trade and domestic production data.

Natural evaporation from open water, bare soil and grass
TL;DR: It is shown that a satisfactory account can be given of open water evaporation at four widely spaced sites in America and Europe, the results for bare soil receive a reasonable check in India, and application of theresults for turf shows good agreement with estimates of evapolation from catchment areas in the British Isles.

On the Assessment of Surface Heat Flux and Evaporation Using Large-Scale Parameters
C. H. B. Priestley,R. J. Taylor +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the large-scale parameterization of the surface fluxes of sensible and latent heat is properly expressed in terms of energetic considerations over land while formulas of the bulk aerodynamic type are most suitahle over the sea.

The Interpretation of the Variations in Leaf Water Potential and Stomatal Conductance Found in Canopies in the Field
TL;DR: In this paper, the stomatal conductance of illuminated leaves is a function of current levels of temperature, vapour pressure deficit, leaf water potential (really turgor pressure) and ambient CO $_2$ concentration and when plotted against any one of these variables a scatter diagram results.

Yield response to water
TL;DR: In this paper, a methodology to quantify yield response to water through aggregate components which form the "handles" to assess crop yields under both adequate and limited water supply is presented, which takes into account maximum and actual crop yields as influenced by water deficits using yield response functions relating relative yield decrease and evapotranspiration deficits.
