TLDR
In this paper, anxiety is defined as the subjective feeling of tension, apprehension, nervousness, and worry associated with an arousal of the autonomic nervous system, which impedes the ability to perform successfully in a foreign language class.
Abstract
teachers of foreign languages. Many people claim to have a mental block against learning a foreign language, although these same people may be good learners in other situations, strongly motivated, and have a sincere liking for speakers of the target language. What, then, prevents them from achieving their desired goal? In many cases, they may have an anxiety reaction which impedes their ability to perform successfully in a foreign language class. Anxiety is the subjective feeling of tension, apprehension, nervousness, and worry associated with an arousal of the autonomic nervous system.2 Just as anxiety prevents some people from performing successfully in science or mathematics, many people find foreign language learning, especially in classroom situations, particularly stressful.

Reenvisioning Language Anxiety in the Globalized Classroom through a Social Imaginary Lens.

TL;DR: This paper focused on and reenvisions the affective variable of language anxiety while recognizing that second language acquisition has benefited much from earlier research insights and taking an interdisciplinary approach and drawing on the notion of the social imaginary, also seeking to expand the field's current theoretical horizon and respond to calls for epistemological diversity.

Profiles of more and less successful L2 learners: A cluster analysis study

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined L1 achievement, intelligence, L2 aptitude, and L2 proficiency profiles of 208 students completing two years of high school L2 courses and performed a cluster analysis to determine whether distinct cognitive and achievement profiles of more and less successful L2 learners would emerge.

Reticence in Oral English Language Classrooms: A Case Study in China

Meihua Liu
- 01 Apr 2005 -
TL;DR: This paper found that many SL/FL students, especially Asian learners, are passive in language classrooms and choose not to use the target language most of the time, especially when responding to teachers (Cortazzi & Jin, 1996; Jackson, 1999, 2001, 2002, Li, 1998, Sato, 1990, Tsui, 1996, Zou, 2004).

Language Anxiety and Proficiency in a Foreign Language

TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis that anxiety about foreign language learning is likely to represent students' differences in language learning.

Language learning in virtual worlds: The role of foreign language and technical anxiety

TL;DR: This paper examined whether or not learners feel less foreign language anxiety (FLA) in an online multiuser 3D virtual world simulation than in the real world classroom and found that students found the virtual environment less stressful in terms of language use and there was not a significant inherent level of technical related anxiety.

Formal and Informal Linguistic Environments in Language Acquisition and Language Learning.

Stephen Krashen
- 01 Jun 1976 -
TL;DR: In this article, evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that informal and formal environments contribute to different aspects of second language competence, the former affecting acquired competence and the latter affecting learned competence, and a distinction must be made between informal environments in which active language use occurs regularly and those in which language use is irregular.
