Torsional Resistance of Drilled Shaft Foundations

Italy is located on a earthquake prone area and old bridges were desinged without any seismic
provision. In the years (2009), tremors were felt in Italy due to the strong earthquakes at
Abruzzo, which highlight the earthquake threat to Italy.
This study focuses on seismic vulnerability of arch type masonry bridge structures in Italy,
designed primarily for gravity loads, when they are subjected to earthquakes. A case study has
been carried out for the vulnerability study for a 11 m span masonry arch bridge representing
typical bridge structure in Italy. In the case study, nonlinear dynamic analyses for the full scale
structures are carried out. The evaluation of the seismic vulnerability is carried out by
verification of arch at mid span and near support of the bridge. The demand curve is obtained
based on the accelerograms due to the worst earthquake scenario in Italy. From these studies,
it is concluded that the arch type masonry bridges in Italy may suffer some damage due to the
worst possible earthquake.

Seismic vulnerability of historical arch type bridge structures in Italy

This paper presents the development and use of a new 10-mm-diameter miniature cone penetrometer which can measure separately the tip and sleeve resistance in laboratory-prepared soil beds. This cone penetrometer is relatively easy to make and costs significantly less than few other commercial penetrometers, which otherwise are usually large and yield inaccurate results due to boundary effects. Application of this cone penetrometer was examined by performing tests on clay and sand beds. A good agreement was obtained between the theoretical and back-calculated cone factor in clay. The tip resistance was equally sensitive to the relative density in the case of sand and could be well correlated with the mobilised friction angle. The advancing cone was enabled to detect from a distance, the upcoming interface between layers of two different relative densities.

In this paper, a model for the analysis of footings having finite flexural rigidity resting on a granular bed on top of stone columns improved saturated soft (clayey) soil has been proposed. Soft soil has been modeled as a Kelvin–Voigt body to represent its time dependent behavior. Pasternak shear layer has been used to represent the granular layer and the stone columns have been idealized by means of nonlinear Winkler springs. Nonlinear behavior of granular fill, soft soil and stone columns has been invoked by means of hyperbolic constitutive relationships. Governing differential equations for the soil–foundation system have been obtained and finite difference method has been adopted for solving these, using the Gauss-elimination iterative scheme.
