This book discusses the biology of host-microparasite associations, dynamics of acquired immunity heterogeneity within the human community indirectly transmitted helminths, and the ecology and genetics of hosts and parasites.Abstract:
Part 1 Microparasites: biology of host-microparasite associations the basic model - statics static aspects of eradication and control the basic model - dynamics dynamic aspects of eradication and control beyond the basic model - empirical evidence of inhomogeneous mixing age-related transmission rates genetic heterogeneity social heterogeneity and sexually transmitted diseases spatial and other kinds of heterogeneity endemic infections in developing countries indirectly transmitted microparasites. Part 2 Macroparasites: biology of host-macroparasite associations the basic model - statics the basic model - dynamics acquired immunity heterogeneity within the human community indirectly transmitted helminths experimental epidemiology parasites, genetic variability, and drug resistance the ecology and genetics of host-parasite associations.read more

Synergism between trematode infection and pesticide exposure: A link to amphibian limb deformities in nature?
TL;DR: Field experiments conclusively demonstrated that exposure to trematode infection was required for the development of limb deformities in wood frogs, Rana sylvatica, and corroborated the association between pesticide exposure and increased infection with pesticide-mediated immunocompetency as the apparent mechanism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathogen spillover in disease epidemics
TL;DR: Results from two field experiments utilizing an experimentally tractable model system of annual wild grasses and a generalist virus provide experimental support for theoretical predictions of strong feedbacks between host community structure and generalist disease dynamics.

Global epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases
TL;DR: In the last decade there have been considerable advances in the field of STDs, fuelled to a large extent by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, but also by increased recognition of the range and severity of complications and sequelae that can be linked to these infections a& the development of new case-management approaches.

Should we expect population thresholds for wildlife disease
James O. Lloyd-Smith,Paul C. Cross,Paul C. Cross,Cheryl J. Briggs,Matthew P. Daugherty,Wayne M. Getz,Wayne M. Getz,John Latto,María S. Sánchez,Adam B. Smith,Andrea Swei +10 more
TL;DR: It is seen that, by their nature, these thresholds are rarely abrupt and always difficult to measure, and important facets of wildlife ecology are neglected by current theories.

The power of a good idea: Quantitative modeling of the spread of ideas from epidemiological models
Luís M. A. Bettencourt,Ariel Cintrón-Arias,Ariel Cintrón-Arias,David Kaiser,Carlos Castillo-Chavez,Carlos Castillo-Chavez +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors apply several paradigmatic models of epidemics to empirical data on the advent and spread of Feynman diagrams through the theoretical physics communities of the USA, Japan, and the USSR in the period immediately after World War II.
