TLDR
In this article, the authors overview the short-term and long-term influences of the land surface on weather and climate, and conclude that terrestrial ecosystem dynamics on these timescales significantly influence atmospheric processes.Abstract:
This paper overviews the short-term (biophysical) and long-term (out to around 100 year timescales; biogeochemical and biogeographical) influences of the land surface on weather and climate. From our review of the literature, the evidence is convincing that terrestrial ecosystem dynamics on these timescales significantly influence atmospheric processes. In studies of past and possible future climate change, terrestrial ecosystem dynamics are as important as changes in atmospheric dynamics and composition, ocean circulation, ice sheet extent, and orbit perturbations.read more

Investigating soil moisture-climate interactions in a changing climate: A review
Sonia I. Seneviratne,T. Corti,Edouard Davin,Martin Hirschi,Eric B. Jaeger,Irene Lehner,Boris Orlowsky,Adriaan J. Teuling +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a synthesis of past research on the role of soil moisture for the climate system, based both on modelling and observational studies, focusing on soil moisture-temperature and soil moistureprecipitation feedbacks, and their possible modifications with climate change.

Hydrological functions of tropical forests: not seeing the soil for the trees?
TL;DR: In this article, a wide range of available scientific evidence with respect to the influence exerted by the presence or absence of a good forest cover on regional climate (rainfall), total and seasonal water yield (floods, low flows), as well as on different forms of erosion and catchment sediment yield under humid tropical conditions in general and in southeast Asia in particular.

Water in a changing world
Robert B. Jackson,Stephen R. Carpenter,Clifford N. Dahm,Diane M. McKnight,Robert J. Naiman,Sandra Postel,Steven W. Running +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors conclude that over half of accessible fresh runoff globally is already appropriated for human use, and that more than 1 × 109 people currently lack access to clean drinking water and almost 3 ×109 people lack basic sanitation services, and because the human population will grow faster than increases in the amount of available fresh water, per capita availability of fresh water will decrease in the coming century.
