Managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation. Special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
TLDR
In this paper, a special report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).Abstract:
This Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report focuses on the relationship between climate change and extreme weather and climate events, the impacts of such events, and the strategies to manage the associated risks. This Special Report, in particular, contributes to frame the challenge of dealing with extreme weather and climate events as an issue in decision making under uncertainty, analyzing response in the context of risk management. The report consists of nine chapters, covering risk management; observed and projected changes in extreme weather and climate events; exposure and vulnerability to as well as losses resulting from such events; adaptation options from the local to the international scale; the role of sustainable development in modulating risks; and insights from specific case studies. Impact of climate change on waterborne diseases
TL;DR: This paper is intended to highlight environmental changes and critical situations caused by floods, drought and warmer temperature that will lead to an increase of exposure to water related pathogens, chemical hazards and cyanotoxins, and provide knowledge-based elements for more focused adaptation measures.

Extreme climate events increase risk of global food insecurity and adaptation needs
Tomoko Hasegawa,Tomoko Hasegawa,Gen Sakurai,Shinichiro Fujimori,Shinichiro Fujimori,Shinichiro Fujimori,Kiyoshi Takahashi,Yasuaki Hijioka,Toshihiko Masui +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors combine crop modelling and climate scenarios to estimate the effects of extreme climate events on future food insecurity, and find that an additional 20-36% and 11-33% population may face hunger by 2050 under a once-per-100-yr extreme climate event under high and low emission scenarios, respectively.

Smart and Resilient Cities. A Systemic Approach for Developing Cross-sectoral Strategies in the Face of Climate Change
TL;DR: This study analyzes the synergies between the Smart City and Resilient City concepts and represents a preliminary step for the development of an operational tool capable to guide planners and decision-makers in carrying out multi-objective strategies addressed to enhance the response capacities of complex urban systems in the face of climate change.

Oxidative Stability of Amino Polymer–Alumina Hybrid Adsorbents for Carbon Dioxide Capture
TL;DR: In this article, the oxidative stability of adsorbents prepared by impregnation of poly(ethylenimine) or poly(allylamine) (PAA) into mesoporous γ-alumina under humid oxidation conditions is evaluated.

Linking disaster risk reduction, climate change and development
E. Lisa F. Schipper,Frank Thomalla,Gregor Vulturius,Gregor Vulturius,Marion Davis,Karlee Johnson +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined how disaster risk reduction and adaptation can inform development to tackle the underlying drivers of disaster risk and found that underlying causes of social vulnerability are still not adequately addressed in policy or practice.
