Managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation. Special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
TLDR
In this paper, a special report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).Abstract:
This Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report focuses on the relationship between climate change and extreme weather and climate events, the impacts of such events, and the strategies to manage the associated risks. This Special Report, in particular, contributes to frame the challenge of dealing with extreme weather and climate events as an issue in decision making under uncertainty, analyzing response in the context of risk management. The report consists of nine chapters, covering risk management; observed and projected changes in extreme weather and climate events; exposure and vulnerability to as well as losses resulting from such events; adaptation options from the local to the international scale; the role of sustainable development in modulating risks; and insights from specific case studies. Coastal multi-hazard vulnerability assessment along the Ganges deltaic coast of Bangladesh–A geospatial approach
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors attempted to develop a coastal vulnerability index (CVI) by using seven physical parameters namely: (a) geomorphology; (b) coastal slope; (c) shoreline change rate; (d) rate of sea level change; (e) mean tide range; (f) bathymetry; and (g) storm surge height.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the long-term effects of rapid human interventions in coastal deltas and showed that highly managed states may allow, under specific conditions, for interventions leading to increasingly resilient systems.

Understanding trends and projections of disaster losses and climate change: Is vulnerability the missing link?
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the role of vulnerability in determining today's and future disaster loss risk, and provide context by way of a modeling case study of observed and projected losses from riverine flooding in Bangladesh.

Quantifying the dependence between extreme rainfall and storm surge in the coastal zone
TL;DR: In this article, the presence of dependence between extreme rainfall and storm surge along the Australian coastline using the most extensive observational records of rainfall and Storm surge events currently available was investigated, showing that the two processes must be considered jointly if flood risk is to be quantified correctly.

Observed increasing water constraint on vegetation growth over the last three decades.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conduct a comprehensive evaluation of changes in water constraint on vegetation growth in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere between 1982 and 2015, finding that a significant increase in vegetation water constraint over this period was associated with a decreasing response time to water scarcity, suggesting a stronger susceptibility of vegetation to drought.
