Managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation. Special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
TLDR
In this paper, a special report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).Abstract:
This Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) has been jointly coordinated by Working Groups I (WGI) and II (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report focuses on the relationship between climate change and extreme weather and climate events, the impacts of such events, and the strategies to manage the associated risks. This Special Report, in particular, contributes to frame the challenge of dealing with extreme weather and climate events as an issue in decision making under uncertainty, analyzing response in the context of risk management. The report consists of nine chapters, covering risk management; observed and projected changes in extreme weather and climate events; exposure and vulnerability to as well as losses resulting from such events; adaptation options from the local to the international scale; the role of sustainable development in modulating risks; and insights from specific case studies. Natural disturbances are spatially diverse but temporally synchronized across temperate forest landscapes in Europe
Cornelius Senf,Rupert Seidl +1 more
TL;DR: The ecological effect of natural disturbances is strongly determined by the topographic template, and as the strong biome-wide synchronization of disturbances was closely linked to climatic extremes, large-scale disturbance episodes are likely in Europe's temperate forests under climate changes.

Review of dependence modeling in hydrology and water resources
Zengchao Hao,Vijay P. Singh +1 more
TL;DR: Strengths and limitations of different methods and avenues for future research, such as dependence modeling in a changing climate, are discussed to aid water resource planners and managers in the selection and application of suitable techniques.

Disaster resilience in a flood-impacted rural Australian town
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted exploratory research conducted in a flood-impacted rural Australian town to identify the factors which residents perceived as supporting community resilience to disaster, including social connectedness and a sense of place, a factor that was also negatively linked to the desire to relocate from the community.

Climate Change in the South American Monsoon System: Present Climate and CMIP5 Projections
TL;DR: The South American monsoon system (SAMS) is the most important climatic feature in South America as mentioned in this paper, and large-scale characteristics of the SAMS: seasonal amplitudes, onset and demise dates, and durations are investigated with the gridded precipitation, Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR), and the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) simulations for two scenarios [historical and high-emission representative concentration pathways (rcp8.5)].
