Mechanical properties of solid polymers

I. M. Ward
TLDR
A concise, self-contained introduction to solid polymers, the mechanics of their behavior and molecular and structural interpretations can be found in this article, which provides extended coverage of recent developments in rubber elasticity, relaxation transitions, non-linear viscoelastic behavior, anisotropic mechanical behavior, yield behavior of polymers and other fields.
Abstract
A concise, self-contained introduction to solid polymers, the mechanics of their behavior and molecular and structural interpretations. This updated edition provides extended coverage of recent developments in rubber elasticity, relaxation transitions, non-linear viscoelastic behavior, anisotropic mechanical behavior, yield behavior of polymers, breaking phenomena, and other fields.

Effect of short chain branching upon the crystallization of model polyamides-11

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of short (C7) branches on the crystallization behavior of model polyamides-11 was studied. And the authors found that the presence of small amounts of C7-branches (<3 branches per 1000 atoms in the main chain) sensibly slowed down the overall crystallization kinetics and the spherulitic linear growth rate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kevlar TM Fiber-Reinforced Polybenzoxazine Alloys for Ballistic Impact Application

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of alloy compositions on the ballistic composite properties was determined and the results revealed that the enhancement in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the Kevlar TM -reinforced polybenzoxazine (BA)/urethane prepolymer (PU) alloys as a matrix were observed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Correlation between microvoid properties and mechanical properties of polyoxymethylene strained beyond yield

J.H. Wendorff
- 01 May 1980 -
TL;DR: In this article, the shape, size distribution and concentration of microvoids were determined as a function of the strain for strained polyoxymethylene and a specific molecular model for the mechanism of microvoid formation was used to calculate the energetic content of the microvoid.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stress-orientation-strain relationships in non-crystalline polymers Part 2 The two-component model developed and applied to rubber- like deformation

TL;DR: In this article, a simple deformation model for non-crystalline polymer deformation is proposed, involving the resolution of deformation into orientational and non-orientational components.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular orientation in uniaxially drawn poly(aryl ether ether ketone): 1. Refractive index and X-ray measurements

TL;DR: In this article, the development of orientation has been studied in samples of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) drawn at 150°C from initially amorphous material at an initial strain rate of 40% min−1 to draw ratios λ = 1-3.24.

The Determination of the Elastic Field of an Ellipsoidal Inclusion, and Related Problems

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that to answer several questions of physical or engineering interest, it is necessary to know only the relatively simple elastic field inside the ellipsoid.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Phenomena of Rupture and Flow in Solids

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of surface scratches on the mechanical strength of solids, and some general conclusions were reached which appear to have a direct bearing on the problem of rupture, from an engineering standpoint, and also on the larger question of the nature of intermolecular cohesion.
Journal ArticleDOI

Yielding of steel sheets containing slits

TL;DR: In this article, a relation between extent of plastic yielding and external load applied was investigated, and panels containing internal and edge slits were loaded in tension and lengths of plastic zones were measured.
