Prevention of diabetes in the BB rat by early immunotherapy using Freund's adjuvant

TLDR
A single intraperitoneal injection of complete Freund's adjuvant in diabetes-prone BB/Wor rats between 9 and 28 years of age reduced the incidence of diabetes at 120 days from 89% to 10-28%, whereas injection of CFA after 40 days of age was ineffective.

Animal models of diabetes mellitus.

TL;DR: Animal models have been used extensively in diabetes research, and a large number of new animal models for the study of diabetes, including knock‐in, generalized knock‐out and tissue‐specific knockout mice are produced.

Gut Microbiome Metagenomics Analysis Suggests a Functional Model for the Development of Autoimmunity for Type 1 Diabetes

TL;DR: Detailed differences in metabolic potential indicate that autoimmune subjects have a functionally aberrant microbiome, and data suggest that a consortium of lactate- and butyrate-producing bacteria in a healthy gut induce a sufficient amount of mucin synthesis to maintain gut integrity.
Journal ArticleDOI

TNF receptor 2 pathway: drug target for autoimmune diseases

TL;DR: A new emerging approach aimed at selectively destroying autoreactive immune cells by specific activation of tumour necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2), which is found on autore active and normal T lymphocytes, with the potential of avoiding or reducing the toxicity observed with existing therapies is presented.

Perspectives in Diabetes Immunoregulatory and Cytokine Imbalances in the Pathogenesis of IDDM Therapeutic Intervention by Immunostimulation

TL;DR: The autoimmune response leading to islet β-cell destruction and IDDM may be amenable to prevention or suppression by therapeutic interventions aimed at stimulating the host's own immunoregulatory mechanisms.

T cell tolerance by clonal elimination in the thymus

TL;DR: The results show that in normal animals tolerance to self-MHC is due to clonal elimination rather than suppression, and indicate that tolerance induction may occur in the thymus at the time immature thymocytes are selected to move into the mature thymocyte pool.

Tumour necrosis factor-α in murine autoimmune 'lupus' nephritis

TL;DR: Evidence is presented that the tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α)gene, which is located within the H-2 complex (the murine major histocompatibility complex), could be involved in the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis in F1 mice.

Induction and therapy of autoimmune diabetes in the non-obese diabetic (NOD/Lt) mouse by a 65-kDa heat shock protein.

TL;DR: The results described here indicate that a beta-cell target antigen in non-obese diabetic (NOD/Lt) mice is a molecule cross-reactive with the 65-kDa heat shock protein (hsp65) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which has importance in the pathogenesis of insulin-dependent diabetes.

Clonal anergy induced in mature Vβ6 + T lymphocytes on immunizing Mls-1 b mice with Mls-1 a expressing cells

TL;DR: It is shown that the induced unresponsiveness is not due to elonal deletion, but rather toElonal anergy, and the data appear to represent an in vivo correlate for the induction of anergy that has been observed in T-cell lines in vitrol l–15.

The Spontaneously Diabetic Wistar Rat: Metabolic and Morphologic Studies

TL;DR: This model of spontaneous diabetes in nonobese rats displays insulin deficiency, glucagon excess, and ketosis, with a dramatic inflammatory lesion during active β-cell destruction, in relation to the severity of the syndrome.
