R1: a rule-based configurer of computer systems

John McDermott

TLDR
R1 is a program that configures VAX-11/780 computer systems and uses Match as its principal problem solving method; it has sufficient knowledge of the configuration domain and of the peculiarities of the various configuration constraints that at each step in the configuration process, it simply recognizes what to do.

Design-as-satisfiability: A new approach to automated synthesis

TL;DR: This article addresses computational synthesis systems that attempt to find a structural description that matches a set of initial functional requirements and design constraints with a finite sequence of production rules, and encodes a design search problem as a Boolean (propositional) satisfiability problem.

Situated computer vision

TL;DR: The modeling of computer vision as a situated process is the general topic of this book and different computer vision techniques will be explored for static scenes as well as dynamic scenes that explicitly or implicitly consider context.

MICON: Automated Design of Computer Systems

TL;DR: It appears that semiconductor designers have just begun to tap the well of possibilities, promising more performance and function in future chips.

Automatically Decomposing Configuration Problems

TL;DR: This work describes a novel decomposition technique exploiting the compositional structure of complex objects and shows experimentally that such a decomposition can improve the efficiency of configurators.

Rete: a fast algorithm for the many pattern/many object pattern match problem

TL;DR: The Rete Match Algorithm is an efficient method for comparing a large collection of patterns to a largeCollection of objects that finds all the objects that match each pattern.

Production rules as a representation for a knowledge-based consultation program

TL;DR: The MYCIN system has begun to exhibit a high level of performance as a consultant on the difficult task of selecting antibiotic therapy for bacteremia and issues of representation and design for the system are discussed.

Production system conflict resolution strategies1

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of conflict resolution in providing support for production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands.
