R1: a rule-based configurer of computer systems

John McDermott
- 01 Sep 1982 -
- Vol. 19, Iss: 1, pp 39-88
TLDR
R1 is a program that configures VAX-11/780 computer systems and uses Match as its principal problem solving method; it has sufficient knowledge of the configuration domain and of the peculiarities of the various configuration constraints that at each step in the configuration process, it simply recognizes what to do.

A problem space approach to expert system specification

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the nature of the processes that operationalize natural task descriptions and describe a language based on a computational model of problem spaces for which these processes are quite simple, and discuss which aspects of their computational model determine the simplicity of these processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Implementation of an expert system for production scheduling

TL;DR: An attempt was made to capture the local knowledge and informal heuristics used by the experienced human production scheduler and to reduce these to a set of rules which would operate on a relational database representing current shop floor status and projected future loading.

Engineering Design: Representation and Reasoning

TL;DR: This second edition recognizes a holistic and integrated view of design as creative, as rigorous, as analytical, and as a problemsolving and decision-based process where representation and reasoning are key to harnessing the authors' understanding and the ability of machines to ease the complexity of design thinking and process.
Journal IssueDOI

Formalizing context-based reasoning: A modeling paradigm for representing tactical human behavior

TL;DR: This paper formally describes the context-based reasoning (CxBR) paradigm, which can be used to represent tactical human behavior in simulations or in the real world.

Rete: a fast algorithm for the many pattern/many object pattern match problem

TL;DR: The Rete Match Algorithm is an efficient method for comparing a large collection of patterns to a largeCollection of objects that finds all the objects that match each pattern.
Journal ArticleDOI

Production rules as a representation for a knowledge-based consultation program

TL;DR: The MYCIN system has begun to exhibit a high level of performance as a consultant on the difficult task of selecting antibiotic therapy for bacteremia and issues of representation and design for the system are discussed.

OPS: a domain-independent production system language

TL;DR: Some of the issues that bear on the design of production system languages are explored and the adequacy of OPS is tried to show for its intended purpose.

Production system conflict resolution strategies1

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of conflict resolution in providing support for production systems designed to function and grow in environments that make large numbers of different, sometimes competing, and sometimes unexpected demands.
