TLDR
Recommendations for probe design and hybridization are presented, and the choice between using multiple probes reflecting all codon possibilities and a unique optimal probe is discussed.

A novel potent vasoconstrictor peptide produced by vascular endothelial cells.

TL;DR: Cloning and sequencing of preproendothelin complementary DNA shows that mature endothelin is generated through an unusual proteolytic processing, and regional homologies to a group of neurotoxins suggest that endothelins is an endogenous modulator of voltage-dependent ion channels.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vascular endothelial growth factor is a secreted angiogenic mitogen

TL;DR: DNA sequencing suggests the existence of several molecular species of VEGF, a heparin-binding growth factor specific for vascular endothelial cells that is able to induce angiogenesis in vivo.
Journal ArticleDOI

Activation of a member of the steroid hormone receptor superfamily by peroxisome proliferators

TL;DR: A member of the steroid hormone receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors is cloned that is activated by a diverse class of rodent hepatocarcinogens that causes proliferation of peroxisomes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure of the insulin receptor substrate IRS-1 defines a unique signal transduction protein.

TL;DR: During insulin stimulation, the IRS-1 protein undergoes tyrosine phosphorylation and binds phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, suggesting that IRS–1 acts as a multisite Mocking' protein to bind signal-transducing molecules containing Src-homology 2 and SRC-Homology-3 domains, which may link the insulin receptor kinase and enzymes regulating cellular growth and metabolism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Isolation of cDNA encoding transcription factor Sp1 and functional analysis of the DNA binding domain.

TL;DR: It is found that purified Sp1 requires Zn(II) for sequence-specific binding to DNA, and it is likely that Sp1 interacts with DNA by binding of the Zn (II) fingers.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor cDNA sequence and aberrant expression of the amplified gene in A431 epidermoid carcinoma cells

TL;DR: The complete 1,210-amino acid sequence of the human epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor precursor, deduced from cDNA clones derived from placental and A431 carcinoma cells, reveals close similarity between the entire predicted ν-erb-B mRNA oncogene product and the receptor transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains.

Improved Estimation of Secondary Structure in Ribonucleic Acids

TL;DR: This method can be used for predicting and assessing possible secondary structures for recently determined RNA sequences and new experimental and theoretical results allow us to improve the method, without making it more complicated.
Journal ArticleDOI

DNA methylation and the frequency of CpG in animal DNA.

Adrian Bird
TL;DR: An analysis of nearest neighbour dinucleotide frequencies and the level of DNA methylation in animals strongly supports the suggestion that 5-methylcytosine (5mC) tends to mutate abnormally frequently to T.
Journal ArticleDOI

Codon catalog usage is a genome strategy modulated for gene expressivity

TL;DR: The nucleic acid sequence bank now contains 161 mRNAs, 43 new genes are added, and internal regulation of mRNA expression by different third base choices between quartet and duet codons is proposed for bacterial genes.
