TLDR
A marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping are notable.
Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.

Recent developments in uterine mesenchymal neoplasms

TL;DR: The difficulty in distinguishing tumour cell necrosis from infarct‐type necrosis and the limited utility of p16 immunohistochemical expression in the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma are highlighted.

Occult lymph node metastasis and risk of regional recurrence in papillary thyroid cancer after bilateral prophylactic central neck dissection: A multi-institutional study.

TL;DR: Although no significant association was observed between the presence of occult lymph node metastasis and regional recurrence, lymph node ratio ≥ 0.26 was an independent predictor of regional lymph node recurrence in papillary thyroid cancer patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and bilateral prophylactic central neck dissection.

Tumor-infiltrating CD39 + CD8 + T cells determine poor prognosis and immune evasion in clear cell renal cell carcinoma patients

TL;DR: Analysis of tumor-infiltrating immune cell landscape in the ccRCC revealed the positive correlation between CD39+CD8+ T cells and Tregs and M2-polarized macrophages, and inhibition of CD39 partially restores the anti-tumor function of CD8+, indicating therapeutic benefit of TKIs therapy.
