A marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping are notable.
Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.

Whole-tumour diffusion kurtosis MR imaging histogram analysis of rectal adenocarcinoma: Correlation with clinical pathologic prognostic factors

TL;DR: DKI metrics with whole-tumour volume histogram analysis, especially K parameters, were associated with important prognostic factors of rectal cancer, and Kmean showed higher AUC and specificity for differentiation of nodal involvement.

Biological functions and clinical significance of the newly identified long non‑coding RNA RP1‑85F18.6 in colorectal cancer

TL;DR: The findings of the present study suggested that lncRNA RP1-85F18.6 may trigger CRC cell proliferation, invasion and cell cycle disruption, and suppress apoptosis and pyroptosis of CRC cells through regulating ΔNp63 expression.

Generating a focused view of disease ontology cancer terms for pan-cancer data integration and analysis.

TL;DR: A DO cancer project is established to be a focused view of cancer terms within the DO and the use of top level terms (DO slims) will enable pan- cancer analysis across datasets generated from any of the cancer term sources where pan-cancer means including or relating to all or multiple types of cancer.

Pancreas image mining: a systematic review of radiomics

TL;DR: Methodologically sound studies on radiomics of the pancreas are characterised by a large sample size and a large number of extracted features, which hold promise as a quantitative imaging biomarker of both focal pancreatic lesions and diffuse changes of the Pancreas.

Laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic digestive surgery: Present and future directions.

TL;DR: This review will focus on the complex digestive procedures as well as those whose use in standard practice could be more controversial, and novel robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures will be updated.
