A marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping are notable.
Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.

Adjuvant radiation with androgen-deprivation therapy for men with lymph node metastases after radical prostatectomy: identifying men who benefit.

TL;DR: A comparative analysis of three current management strategies for patients with lymph node metastases (LNM; pN1) following radical prostatectomy (RP): observation, androgen‐deprivation therapy (ADT), and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) + ADT.

Foxo3a drives proliferation in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma through transcriptional regulation of cyclin A1: a paradigm shift that impacts current therapeutic strategies.

TL;DR: It is shown that FoxO3a remains nuclear in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), which correlates with lack of Akt phosphorylation at serine473 in ATC cell lines and tissues of ATC patients, providing a potential explanation for nuclear FoxO2a.

Prognostic markers in metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical outcomes and prognostic factors for patients with node‐positive head and neck cutaneous SCC who underwent lymphadenectomy.

Prognostic value of the albumin-bilirubin grade in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver diseases.

TL;DR: The application of the ALBI grade into currently used HCC staging systems such as the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, the Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP) stage system, and the Japan Integrated Staging (JIS) score, etc., as well as newly produced systems like the AL BI-PLT grade, the ALbi and progression disease (ALBI-PD) grade and Modified Intermediate Stage of Liver Cancer

Addition of the tumour-stroma ratio to the 8th edition American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system improves survival prediction for patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

TL;DR: The aims of this study were to evaluate the prognostic value of the tumour–stroma ratio (TSR), defined as the proportion of tumour cells relative to surrounding stroma, in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), and to develop a prognostic nomogram based on the most significant clinicopathological features.
