Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.

Clinical predictors of lymph node metastasis and survival rate in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: analysis of 3607 patients at a single institution.

TL;DR: For PTMC patients with higher LNM risk, preoperative central and lateral cervical lymph node imaging examination should be emphasized, and lymph node dissection is recommended, and the range of dissection should be determined based on the imaging results.

Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio is a more sensitive systemic inflammatory response biomarker than platelet/lymphocyte ratio in the prognosis evaluation of unresectable pancreatic cancer.

TL;DR: NLR is a more sensitive biomarker than PLR in the prediction of chemotherapy response of patients, and patients who stayed in or dropped into the low NLR level subgroup after first-line chemotherapy had better responses to chemotherapy.

A Combined Prognostic Serum Interleukin-8 and Interleukin-6 Classifier for Stage 1 Lung Cancer in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial

TL;DR: The results further support the association between inflammatory markers and lung cancer outcome and suggest that a combined serum IL-6/IL-8 classifier could be a useful tool for guiding therapeutic decisions in patients with stage I lung cancer.

A randomised comparison of two faecal immunochemical tests in population-based colorectal cancer screening

TL;DR: The findings imply that for a fair comparison on diagnostic yield between FIT's positivity rate rather than Hb concentration should be used, and that FOB-Gold was prone to more non-analysable tests.

RAGE Gene Polymorphism and Environmental Factor in the Risk of Oral Cancer

TL;DR: Results indicate an involvement of RAGE SNP rs1800625 in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma and implicate the interaction between RAGE gene polymorphisms and environmental mutagens as a predisposing factor of oral carcinogenesis.
