TLDR
A marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping are notable.Abstract:
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.read more

Adjunctive role of preoperative liver magnetic resonance imaging for potentially resectable pancreatic cancer
Hyoung Woo Kim,Jong-Chan Lee,Kyu Hyun Paik,Jingu Kang,Young Hoon Kim,Yoo Seok Yoon,Ho-Seong Han,Jaihwan Kim,Jin-Hyeok Hwang +8 more
TL;DR: Preoperative hepatic magnetic resonance imaging should be considered in patients with potentially resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, especially those with high tumor burden, as well as in surgeons select appropriate candidates and decrease the risk of early recurrence.

Characteristics and Limitations of FDG PET/CT for Imaging of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck: A Comprehensive Review of Anatomy, Metastatic Pathways, and Image Findings.
Nicholas A. Plaxton,David C. Brandon,Amanda S. Corey,Chester Harrison,A Tuba Kendi,Raghuveer Halkar,Bruce J. Barron +6 more
TL;DR: Understanding the characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, as imaged by FDG PET/CT, is crucial for determining treatment strategy, because it helps to avoid incorrect staging and also provides an accurate assessment of treatment response.

Development of a deregulating microRNA panel for the detection of early relapse in postoperative colorectal cancer patients
I-Ping Yang,Hsiang-Lin Tsai,Zhi-Feng Miao,Ching-Wen Huang,Chao-Hung Kuo,Jeng-Yih Wu,Wen-Ming Wang,Suh-Hang Hank Juo,Jaw-Yuan Wang +8 more
TL;DR: This study showed that the developed miR panel has the potential to improve predicting early relapse in CRC patients.

Skip metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma is difficult to predict in clinical practice
Xilin Nie,Zhou Tan,Minghua Ge +2 more
TL;DR: Small cancers with a pre-operation diagnosis of LLNM are more likely to have skip metastases, especially when the primary tumor size is less than 0.5 cm in diameter; however, additional research is needed to identify potential predictive factors, such as a primary tumor located at the upper pole.
Journal ArticleDOI
Staging of pancreatic cancer based on the number of positive lymph nodes.
Ignazio Tarantino,Rene Warschkow,Rene Warschkow,Thilo Hackert,Bruno M. Schmied,Markus W. Büchler,Oliver Strobel,Alexis Ulrich +7 more
TL;DR: A population‐based study was to evaluate whether the number of positive lymph nodes refines staging of pancreatic cancer, and it was found that at least 12 lymph nodes should be evaluated for staging.
