Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.

SERPINA3 Silencing Inhibits the Migration, Invasion, and Liver Metastasis of Colon Cancer Cells.

TL;DR: Serpina3 siRNA could not only reduce live metastasis of mice, but also down-regulate the expression of Mmp-2 and MMP-9 in liver metastasis tissues.

Treatment-related outcome of oropharyngeal cancer patients differentiated by HPV dictated risk profile: a tertiary cancer centre series analysis

TL;DR: Low- and intermediate-risk OPC patients had a better survival when treated with CRT compared with open surgery followed by radiation therapy, and data suggest that different treatment approaches might be essential in determining outcome results.

Meta-analysis of the impact of surgical approach on the grade of mesorectal excision in rectal cancer

TL;DR: This study aimed to assess the pathological outcomes of open versus laparoscopic rectal resection.

Serine-arginine protein kinase 1 (SRPK1), a determinant of angiogenesis, is upregulated in prostate cancer and correlates with disease stage and invasion.

TL;DR: Interestingly, the expression did not correlate with Gleason grade (p=0.21), suggesting that SRPK1 facilitates the development of a tumour microenvironment that favours growth and invasion while having little bearing on the morphology or function of the tumour cells themselves.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer Is Associated With Lower Disease Stage: A Population-Based Study

TL;DR: The value of screening colonoscopy to reduce the burden of CRC is supported, as the odds of diagnosing CRC at an advanced stage were significantly lower in the screening group and the FOBT work-up group than with the group with symptoms.
