TLDR
A marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping are notable.Abstract:
The American Joint Committee on Cancer and the International Union for Cancer Control update the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) cancer staging system periodically. The most recent revision is the 7th edition, effective for cancers diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010. This editorial summarizes the background of the current revision and outlines the major issues revised. Most notable are the marked increase in the use of international datasets for more highly evidenced-based changes in staging, and the enhanced use of nonanatomic prognostic factors in defining the stage grouping. The future of cancer staging lies in the use of enhanced registry data standards to support personalization of cancer care through cancer outcome prediction models and nomograms.read more

Meta-analysis of prognostic factors for overall survival in patients with resected hilar cholangiocarcinoma.
TL;DR: The objective of this meta‐analysis was to assess statistically the effect of postresectional tumour characteristics on overall survival of patients undergoing attempted radical curative resection for hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

TL;DR: Although the present study was not randomized, neoadjuvant LHRH + EMP therapy followed by RP might reduce the risk of biochemical recurrence.

TL;DR: It was showed that patients with M1 disease had acceptable MST after margin-negative resection and a high incidence of peritoneal carcinomatosis within 3 years after surgery, resulting in decreased long-term survival.

Novel digital signatures of tissue phenotypes for predicting distant metastasis in colorectal cancer
Korsuk Sirinukunwattana,David Snead,David Epstein,Zia Aftab,Imaad Mujeeb,Yee Wah Tsang,Ian A. Cree,Nasir M. Rajpoot,Nasir M. Rajpoot,Nasir M. Rajpoot +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that automated analysis of digitized images from locally advanced colorectal cancer tissue slides can provide estimate of risk of distant metastasis on the basis of novel tissue phenotypic signatures of the tumor microenvironment.

Mean platelet volume provides beneficial diagnostic and prognostic information for patients with resectable gastric cancer
Xiao-Ming Shen,You-You Xia,Lian Lian,Chong Zhou,Xiang-Li Li,Shu-Guang Han,Yan Zheng,Fei-Ran Gong,Min Tao,Zhong-Qi Mao,Wei Li +10 more
TL;DR: The results showed that the pre-operatic MPV level was significantly higher in gastric cancer patients compared with the healthy subjects and correlated with improved clinicopathological features, including decreased depth of invasion, less lymphonodus metastasis and early tumor stage.
