TLDR
A recent surge of interest in palaeobotanical discoveries and advances in the systematics of living plants provides a revised perspective on the evolution of early land plants and suggests new directions for future research.Abstract:
The origin and early evolution of land plants in the mid-Palaeozoic era, between about 480 and 360 million years ago, was an important event in the history of life, with far-reaching consequences for the evolution of terrestrial organisms and global environments. A recent surge of interest, catalysed by palaeobotanical discoveries and advances in the systematics of living plants, provides a revised perspective on the evolution of early land plants and suggests new directions for future research.read more

TL;DR: Evidence is presented that carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 8 shoot branching mutants of pea are strigolactone deficient and that strigOLactone application restores the wild-type branching phenotype to ccd8 mutants, and that other branching mutants previously characterized as lacking a response to the branching inhibition signal also lack striglactone response.

Ancestral polyploidy in seed plants and angiosperms
Yuannian Jiao,Norman J. Wickett,Saravanaraj Ayyampalayam,André S. Chanderbali,Lena Landherr,Paula E. Ralph,Lynn P. Tomsho,Yi Hu,Haiying Liang,Pamela S. Soltis,Douglas E. Soltis,Sandra W. Clifton,Scott E. Schlarbaum,Stephan C. Schuster,Hong Ma,Jim Leebens-Mack,Claude W. dePamphilis +16 more
TL;DR: Comprehensive phylogenomic analyses of sequenced plant genomes and more than 12.6 million new expressed-sequence-tag sequences from phylogenetically pivotal lineages are used to elucidate two groups of ancient gene duplications, implicating two WGDs in ancestral lineages shortly before the diversification of extant seed plants and extant angiosperms.

TL;DR: This comparison reveals genomic changes concomitant with the evolutionary movement to land, including a general increase in gene family complexity; loss of genes associated with aquatic environments; acquisition of genes for tolerating terrestrial stresses; and the development of the auxin and abscisic acid signaling pathways for coordinating multicellular growth and dehydration response.

Structure, function and evolution of glutathione transferases: implications for classification of non-mammalian members of an ancient enzyme superfamily.
TL;DR: Non-mammalian GSTs have been much less well characterized, but have provided a disproportionately large number of three-dimensional structures, thus extending the authors' knowledge of glutathione transferases in mammals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coevolution of roots and mycorrhizas of land plants
TL;DR: It is hypothesised that roots gradually evolved from rhizomes to provide more suitable habitats for mycorrhizal fungi and provide plants with complex branching and leaves with water and nutrients.

Geocarb III: A Revised Model of Atmospheric CO2 over Phanerozoic Time
TL;DR: In this article, the GEOCARB model has been updated with an emphasis on factors affecting CO2 uptake by continental weathering, including the role of plants in chemical weathering and the application of GCMs to study the long-term carbon cycle.

Four hundred-million-year-old vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae
TL;DR: The discovery of arbuscules in Aglaophyton major, an Early Devonian land plant, provides unequivocal evidence that mycorrhizae were established >400 million years ago and indicates that nutrient transfer mutualism may have been in existence when plants invaded the land.

Plant Allometry: The Scaling of Form and Process
TL;DR: Allometry, the study of the growth rate of an organism's parts in relation to the whole, has produced various results in research on animals as discussed by the authors and applies allometry to studies of the evolution, morphology, physiology and reproduction of plants.

Origin and diversification of endomycorrhizal fungi and coincidence with vascular land plants
TL;DR: The phylogenetic analyses confirm the existence of three families within arbuscular fungi on the basis of morphological characters and obtain approximate dates for the divergence of major branche's on the phylogenetic tree, consistent with the hypothesis that VAM were instrumental in the colonization of land by ancient plants.
