TLDR
A multicentennial and absolutely-dated shell-based chronology for the marine environment of the North Icelandic Shelf has been constructed using annual growth increments in the shell of the long-lived bivalve clam Arctica islandica.About:
This article is published in Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. The article was published on 2013-03-01. It has received 315 citations till now. The article focuses on the topics: Arctica islandica & Sclerochronology.read more

Eye lens radiocarbon reveals centuries of longevity in the Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus).
Julius Nielsen,Rasmus Hedeholm,Jan Heinemeier,Peter G. Bushnell,Jørgen S. Christiansen,Jesper V. Olsen,Christopher Bronk Ramsey,Richard W. Brill,Richard W. Brill,Malene Simon,Kirstine F. Steffensen,John F. Steffensen +11 more
TL;DR: The results show that the Greenland shark is the longest-lived vertebrate known, and they raise concerns about species conservation.

Oxidative Stress and Hormesis in Evolutionary Ecology and Physiology
TL;DR: This chapter provides a general historical background, with definitions and information of free radicals, antioxidants and oxidative stress and examines how mild doses of stress can have stimulatory effects on organismal performance through hormetic mechanisms and that this may significantly relate to evolutionary fitness and to the ecology of species.

surface changes in the north Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during the last millennium
Alan D. Wanamaker,Paul G. Butler,James D. Scourse,Jan Heinemeier,Jón Eiríksson,Jón Eiríksson,Karen Luise Knudsen,Christopher A. Richardson +7 more
TL;DR: Water mass tracer data presented here from the North Icelandic shelf, combined with previously published data from the Arctic and subtropical Atlantic, show that surface Atlantic meridional overturning circulation dynamics likely amplified the relatively warm conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the relatively cool conditions within the Little Ice Age within the North Atlantic sector.

Gladfelter,James G. Umen,Magdalena Bezanilla,Madeline A. Lancaster,Shuonan He,Matthew C. Gibson,Matthew C. Gibson,Bob Goldstein,Elly M. Tanaka,Chi-Kuo Hu,Anne Brunet +20 more
TL;DR: A range of 'non-model model organisms' are highlighted as emerging systems for tackling questions across the whole spectrum of biology (and beyond), the opportunities and challenges, and the outlook for the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genetics of human ageing
TL;DR: Bringing together different strands of genetic research, including results from recent large-scale genome-wide association studies relevant to human ageing, the authors highlight how genetics can further the authors' understanding of the underlying mechanisms of ageing.

Global analyses of sea surface temperature, sea ice, and night marine air temperature since the late nineteenth century
Nick Rayner,David E. Parker,E. B. Horton,Chris K. Folland,Lisa V. Alexander,David P. Rowell,Elizabeth C. Kent,Alexey Kaplan +7 more
TL;DR: HadISST1 as mentioned in this paper replaces the global sea ice and sea surface temperature (GISST) data sets and is a unique combination of monthly globally complete fields of SST and sea ice concentration on a 1° latitude-longitude grid from 1871.

Spectrum estimation and harmonic analysis
TL;DR: In this article, a local eigenexpansion is proposed to estimate the spectrum of a stationary time series from a finite sample of the process, which is equivalent to using the weishted average of a series of direct-spectrum estimates based on orthogonal data windows to treat both bias and smoothing problems.
