TL;DR: In this article, the ITER design requirements were reviewed and as appropriate updated and the focus of this paper will be on recent work affecting ITER with special emphasis on topics affecting near-term procurement arrangements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Direct Observation of the Resistive Wall Mode in a Tokamak and Its Interaction with Plasma Rotation
Am Garofalo,A. D. Turnbull,Max E Austin,J.M. Bialek,Ming-Sheng Chu,K. J. Comer,E.D. Fredrickson,R. J. Groebner,R.J. La Haye,L.L. Lao,E. A. Lazarus,G.A. Navratil,T.H. Osborne,B. W. Rice,S.A. Sabbagh,J. T. Scoville,E. J. Strait,T. S. Taylor +17 more
TL;DR: Using newly developed techniques and improved diagnostics, rotating wall-stabilized discharges have been maintained in the DIII-D tokamak for 30 characteristic resistive wall decay times, significantly longer than was previously achieved.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustained Stabilization of the Resistive-Wall Mode by Plasma Rotation in the DIII-D Tokamak
Am Garofalo,E. J. Strait,L. C. Johnson,R.J. La Haye,E.A. Lazarus,Gerald Navratil,M. Okabayashi,J. T. Scoville,T. S. Taylor,A. D. Turnbull +9 more
TL;DR: Values of the normalized plasma pressure up to twice the free-boundary stability limit predicted by ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory have been sustained in the DIII-D tokamak.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustained rotational stabilization of DIII-D plasmas above the no-wall beta limit
Am Garofalo,Torkil H. Jensen,L. C. Johnson,R.J. La Haye,Gerald Navratil,M. Okabayashi,J. T. Scoville,E. J. Strait,D.R. Baker,J.M. Bialek,Ming-Sheng Chu,J.R. Ferron,J. Jayakumar,L.L. Lao,M. A. Makowski,H. Reimerdes,T. S. Taylor,A. D. Turnbull,M. R. Wade,S. K. Wong +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrated that a resonant response to error fields in a plasma approaching marginal stability to a low-n kink mode leads to strong damping of the toroidal rotation, precisely in the high-beta regime where it is needed for stabilization.
