Genome-wide and fine-resolution association analysis of malaria in West Africa

Muminatou Jallow, +90 more
- 01 Jun 2009 -
TL;DR: These findings provide proof of principle that fine-resolution multipoint imputation, based on population-specific sequencing data, can substantially boost authentic GWA signals and enable fine mapping of causal variants in African populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plasma antibodies from malaria-exposed pregnant women recognize variant surface antigens on Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in a parity-dependent manner and block parasite adhesion to chondroitin sulfate A.

TL;DR: This study shows that adults from an area of hyperendemic P. falciparum transmission generally possessed low levels of Abs specifically recognizing surface Ags expressed by a CSA-adhering parasite isolate, while unselected isolates were well recognized, and supports the hypothesis that Abs inhibiting C SA-specific parasite sequestration are important in acquisition of protection against PAM.
Journal ArticleDOI

Absolute levels and ratios of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine production in vitro predict clinical immunity to Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

TL;DR: The relationship between malaria-related outcomes and cytokine production in whole blood cultures associated with cellular immune responses and immunity to Plasmodium falciparum malaria was examined and high ratios of proinflammatory to anti-inflammatory cytokines were associated with increased risk of fever and higher hemoglobin concentrations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Malaria-related beliefs and behaviour in southern Ghana: implications for treatment, prevention and control

TL;DR: Though the human dwellings in the study communities conferred no real protection against mosquitoes, bednet usage was low while residents combatted the nuisance of mosquitoes with insecticide sprays, burning of coils and herbs, which they largely considered as temporary measures.
