Mortality after Fluid Bolus in African Children with Severe Infection
Kathryn Maitland,Sarah Kiguli,Robert O. Opoka,Charles Engoru,Peter Olupot-Olupot,Samuel Akech,Richard Nyeko,George Mtove,Hugh Reyburn,Trudie Lang,Bernadette Brent,Jennifer Evans,James K. Tibenderana,Jane Crawley,Elizabeth C. Russell,Michael Levin,Abdel Babiker,Diana M. Gibb +17 more
TL;DR: Fuid boluses significantly increased 48-hour mortality in critically ill children with impaired perfusion in these resource-limited settings in Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kwiatkowski,Dominic P. Kwiatkowski +90 more
TL;DR: These findings provide proof of principle that fine-resolution multipoint imputation, based on population-specific sequencing data, can substantially boost authentic GWA signals and enable fine mapping of causal variants in African populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-wide association study indicates two novel resistance loci for severe malaria.
Christian Timmann,Thorsten Thye,Maren Vens,Jennifer Evans,Jürgen May,Christa Ehmen,Jürgen Sievertsen,Birgit Muntau,Gerd Ruge,Wibke Loag,Daniel Ansong,Sampson Antwi,Emanuel Asafo-Adjei,Samuel Blay Nguah,Kingsley Osei Kwakye,Alex Osei Yaw Akoto,Justice Sylverken,Michael Brendel,Kathrin Schuldt,Christina Loley,Andre Franke,Christian Meyer,Tsiri Agbenyega,Andreas Ziegler,Rolf D. Horstmann +24 more
TL;DR: Two previously unknown loci associated with severe falciparum malaria in patients and controls from Ghana, West Africa are identified and underline the potential of the GWA approach to provide candidates for the development of control measures against infectious diseases in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exploring mechanisms of excess mortality with early fluid resuscitation: insights from the FEAST trial
Kathryn Maitland,Elizabeth C George,Jennifer Evans,Sarah Kiguli,Peter Olupot-Olupot,Samuel Akech,Robert O. Opoka,Charles Engoru,Richard Nyeko,George Mtove,Hugh Reyburn,Bernadette Brent,Julius Nteziyaremye,Ayub Mpoya,Natalie Prevatt,Cornelius M Dambisya,Daniel Semakula,Ahmed Ddungu,Vicent Okuuny,Ronald Wokulira,Molline Timbwa,Benedict Otii,Michael Levin,Jane Crawley,Abdel Babiker,Diana M. Gibb +25 more
TL;DR: Excess mortality from boluses occurred in all subgroups of children and should prompt a re-evaluation of evidence on fluid resuscitation for shock and are-appraisal of the rate, composition and volume of resuscitation fluids.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hemoglobin Variants and Disease Manifestations in Severe Falciparum Malaria
Jiirgen May,Jennifer Evans,Christian Timmann,Christa Ehmen,Wibke Busch,Thorsten Thye,Tsiri Agbenyega,Rolf D. Horstmann +7 more
TL;DR: Whereas the HbS carrier state was found to be negatively associated with all major forms of severe falciparum malaria, the negative associations of the carrier states of HbC and -alpha appeared to be limited to cerebral malaria and severe anemia, respectively.
