This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Synthesis and surface engineering of iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Rapid growth in nanotechnology is increasing the likelihood of engineered nanomaterials coming into contact with humans and the environment. Nanoparticles interacting with proteins, membranes, cells, DNA and organelles establish a series of nanoparticle/biological interfaces that depend on colloidal forces as well as dynamic biophysicochemical interactions. These interactions lead to the formation of protein coronas, particle wrapping, intracellular uptake and biocatalytic processes that could have biocompatible or bioadverse outcomes. For their part, the biomolecules may induce phase transformations, free energy releases, restructuring and dissolution at the nanomaterial surface. Probing these various interfaces allows the development of predictive relationships between structure and activity that are determined by nanomaterial properties such as size, shape, surface chemistry, roughness and surface coatings. This knowledge is important from the perspective of safe use of nanomaterials.

A large number of hydrogels can be classified as smart materials that offer a natural integration of sensing, actuating, and regulating functions applicable to feedback control systems. This multifunctionality added to biocompatibility and enzyme-based selectivity characteristics enables self-regulation or implicit control in hydrogels-based devices to maintain physiological variables at a desired level or range by appropriate drug release. Therefore, hydrogels can enhance the performance of individual actuator and sensing units. Applications of hydrogels in explicit and implicit controller systems are presented based on recent experimental and theoretical research studies. Integration of cascade and feedforward control types of functionalities in hydrogels systems is suggested from their capability to respond to more than one stimulus. Enzymatic glucose sensing and insulin delivery are often used as references for the discussion of hydrogels in the development of sensor, actuator, and control technology due to the relevance of the diabetes disease.

Sol-Gel processing: The physics and chemistry of sol-gel processing

Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate possible interactions during transport of oxprenolol . HCl, bovine serum albumin, α-chymotrypsin, and fibrinogen through poly(acrylic acid) and its random copolymeric gels. Carbonyl and carboxylate ion peak shifts were used to identify drug/gel binding due to electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions between the polymer carrier and the drugs tested. These findings were used to interpret the decrease in calculated diffusion coefficients of drugs diffusing through these gels and the associated hindering of drug transport. A model was developed to analyze this transport process as a function of the binding heat of the drug with the polymer.

FTIR spectroscopic investigation and modeling of solute/polymer interactions in the hydrated state.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) microparticles were prepared by a novel freezing-thawing process in the absence of a crosslinking agent. An aqueous PVA solution to which 1.25 wt% sodium lauryl sulfate was added was dispersed in corn oil. The system was agitated and the ensuing suspended droplets of PVA solution were solidified by a cyclic freezing-thawing process. Key parameters of the process were the PVA to corn oil ratio, the amount of surfactant added, agitation speed, number of freeze cycles, temperatures of freezing and thawing, and presence of additional components. Crystallization was observed during the freezing-thawing process. The degree of crystallinity was measured with differential scanning calorimetry. Bovine serum albumin was incorporated into the particles by an absorption technique. Studies of BSA release from the microparticles in vitro showed that the release could be prolonged for up to 7 days. BSA diffusion coefficients were calculated from these data and the release mechanism was identified.
