TL;DR: A general model in which faculty and teaching assistants from diverse academic institutions are trained to teach a research course for first-year undergraduate students focused on bacteriophage discovery and genomics is developed, showing that this alliance-sourced model not only substantially advances the field of phage genomics but also stimulates students’ interest in science, positively influences academic achievement, and enhances persistence inScience, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

TL;DR: Characterization of ten Cluster N temperate mycobacteriophages revealed at least five distinct prophage-expressed viral defence systems that interfere with the infection of lytic and temperate phages that are either closely related (homotypic defence) or unrelated (heterotypic Defence) to the prophages.

Novel endogenous peptide agonists of cannabinoid receptors
Ivone Gomes,Julia S. Grushko,Urszula Golebiewska,Sascha Hoogendoorn,Achla Gupta,Andrea S. Heimann,Emer S. Ferro,Suzanne Scarlata,Lloyd D. Fricker,Lakshmi A. Devi +9 more
TL;DR: Results suggest that the CB1 receptor is involved in the integration of signals from both lipid‐ and peptide‐derived signaling molecules, and suggests an additional mode of regulation of endogenous cannabinoid receptor activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diffusion Coefficient of Fluorescent Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate in the Plasma Membrane of Cells
TL;DR: This work microinjected micelles of Bodipy TMR-PIP(2) into cells, and measured D on the inner leaflet of fibroblasts and epithelial cells by using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, finding that the average +/- SD value was D, which is significantly lower than the D in the outer leaflet or in giant unilamellar vesicles and the diffusion coefficient for other lipids on the workings of these cell membranes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Membrane-Bound Basic Peptides Sequester Multivalent (PIP2), but Not Monovalent (PS), Acidic Lipids
Urszula Golebiewska,Alok Gambhir,Gyöngyi Hangyás-Mihályné,Irina Zaitseva,Joachim O. Rädler,Stuart McLaughlin +5 more
TL;DR: Three experimental observations are reported that suggest monovalent acidic lipids are not sequestered by membrane-bound basic peptides, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy measurements show basic peptide bound to phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidolserine membranes have a diffusion coefficient approximately twofold higher than that of lipids.
