Abstract: This paper examines electronic mail in organizational communication. Based on ideas about how social context cues within a communication setting affect information exchange, it argues that electronic mail does not simply speed up the exchange of information but leads to the exchange of new information as well. In a field study in a Fortune 500 company, we used questionnaire data and actual messages to examine electronic mail communication at all levels of the organization. Based on hypotheses from research on social communication, we explored effects of electronic communication related to self-absorption, status equalization, and uninhibited behavior. Consistent with experimental studies, we found that decreasing social context cues has substantial deregulating effects on communication. And we found that much of the information conveyed through electronic mail was information that would not have been conveyed through another medium.

In this Commentary, we discuss the plausibility of the belief that stress contributes to a variety of disease processes and summarize the role of stress in 4 major diseases: clinical depression, cardiovascular disease (CVD), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS, and cancer.

This endeavor is really a study of diffusion processes. Loosely speaking, the term diffusion is attributed to a Markov process which has continuous sample paths and can be characterized in terms of its infinitesimal generator.

Abstract: An investigation is conducted of two protocols belonging to the priority inheritance protocols class; the two are called the basic priority inheritance protocol and the priority ceiling protocol. Both protocols solve the uncontrolled priority inversion problem. The priority ceiling protocol solves this uncontrolled priority inversion problem particularly well; it reduces the worst-case task-blocking time to at most the duration of execution of a single critical section of a lower-priority task. This protocol also prevents the formation of deadlocks. Sufficient conditions under which a set of periodic tasks using this protocol may be scheduled is derived. >
