TL;DR: It is shown that most tree species are extremely rare, meaning that they may be under serious risk of extinction at current deforestation rates, and a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees is provided that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.
Abstract: The high species richness of tropical forests has long been recognized, yet there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the actual number of tropical tree species. Using a pantropical tree inventory database from closed canopy forests, consisting of 657,630 trees belonging to 11,371 species, we use a fitted value of Fisher's alpha and an approximate pantropical stem total to estimate the minimum number of tropical forest tree species to fall between similar to 40,000 and similar to 53,000, i.e., at the high end of previous estimates. Contrary to common assumption, the Indo-Pacific region was found to be as species-rich as the Neotropics, with both regions having a minimum of similar to 19,000-25,000 tree species. Continental Africa is relatively depauperate with a minimum of similar to 4,500-6,000 tree species. Very few species are shared among the African, American, and the Indo-Pacific regions. We provide a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.

TL;DR: The characterization of the proposed double-threshold detector demonstrates that, in most practical situations, the bias of the estimates of the on-off transitions is smaller than 10 ms, the standard deviation may be kept lower than 15 ms, and the percentage of erroneous patterns is below 5%.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to present an original double-threshold detector of muscle activation, specifically developed for gait analysis. This detector operates on the raw myoelectric signal and, hence, it does not require any envelope detection. Its performances are fixed by the values of 3 parameters, namely, false-alarm probability (P/sub fa/), detection probability, and time resolution. Double-threshold detectors are preferable to single-threshold ones because, for a fixed value of the P/sub fa/, they yield higher detection probability; furthermore, they allow the user to select the couple false alarm-detection probability with a higher degree of freedom, thus, adapting the performances of the detector to the characteristics of the myoelectric signal of interest and of the experimental situation. Here, first the authors derive the detection algorithm and describe different strategies for selecting its parameters, then they present the performances of the proposed procedure evaluated by means of computer simulations, and finally they report an example of application to myoelectric signals recorded during gait. The characterization of the proposed double-threshold detector demonstrates that, in most practical situations, the bias of the estimates of the on-off transitions is smaller than 10 ms, the standard deviation may be kept lower than 15 ms, and the percentage of erroneous patterns is below 5%. These results show that this detection approach is satisfactory in research applications as well as in the clinical practice.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new active damping method that does not require the use of more sensors is presented. But the method is used only for the optimum choice of the parameters in the filter and an on-line implementation is not needed.
Abstract: Active rectifiers/inverters are becoming used more and more often in regenerative systems and distributed power systems. Typically, the interface between the grid and rectifier is either an inductor or an LCL-filter. The use of an LCL-filter mitigates the switching ripple injected in the grid by a three-phase active rectifier. However, stability problems can arise in the current control loop. In order to overcome them, a damping resistor can be inserted, at the price of a reduction of efficiency. The use of active damping by means of control may seem attractive but it is often limited by the use of more sensors compared to the standard control and also by a complex tuning procedure of the controllers. This paper introduces a new active damping method that does not require the use of more sensors. It consists of adding a filter on the reference voltage for the modulator. The tuning process of this filter is easily done, for a wide range of sampling frequencies, with the use of genetic algorithms. This method is used only for the optimum choice of the parameters in the filter and an on-line implementation is not needed. Thus the resulting active damping solution does not need new sensors or complex calculations. Moreover, in the paper particular attention is devoted to the susceptibility of the system in a high polluting environment.

TL;DR: In this article, a review and classification of methods for smart charging (including power to vehicle and vehicle-to-grid) of electric vehicles for fleet operators is presented, and three control strategies and their commonly used algorithms are described.
Abstract: Electric vehicles can become integral parts of a smart grid, since they are capable of providing valuable services to power systems other than just consuming power. On the transmission system level, electric vehicles are regarded as an important means of balancing the intermittent renewable energy resources such as wind power. This is because electric vehicles can be used to absorb the energy during the period of high electricity penetration and feed the electricity back into the grid when the demand is high or in situations of insufficient electricity generation. However, on the distribution system level, the extra loads created by the increasing number of electric vehicles may have adverse impacts on grid. These factors bring new challenges to the power system operators. To coordinate the interests and solve the conflicts, electric vehicle fleet operators are proposed both by academics and industries. This paper presents a review and classification of methods for smart charging (including power to vehicle and vehicle-to-grid) of electric vehicles for fleet operators. The study firstly presents service relationships between fleet operators and other four actors in smart grids; then, modeling of battery dynamics and driving patterns of electric vehicles, charging and communications standards are introduced; after that, three control strategies and their commonly used algorithms are described; finally, conclusion and recommendations are made.
