TL;DR: Methods developed for testing filamentous fungi (molds) include standardized broth microdilution methods and disk diffusion methods and the link between resistance molecular mechanisms, elevated MICs, and clinical treatment failure has been documented.
Abstract: Methods developed for testing filamentous fungi (molds) include standardized broth microdilution (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute [CLSI] and European Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing [AFST-EUCAST]) methods and disk diffusion (CLSI) methods. Quality control limits also are available from CLSI for MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration), MEC (minimal effective concentration), and zone diameters. Although clinical breakpoints based on correlations of in vitro results with clinical outcome have not been established, epidemiologic cutoff values have been defined for six Aspergillus species and the triazoles, caspofungin, and amphotericin B. The link between resistance molecular mechanisms, elevated MICs, and clinical treatment failure has also been documented, especially for Aspergillus and the triazoles. Other insights into the potential clinical value of high MICs have also been reported. Various commercial methods (e.g., YeastOne, Etest, and Neo-Sensitabs) have been evaluated in comparison with reference methods. This review summarizes and discusses these developments.

TL;DR: In this paper, the contribution of buoyancy, hemodynamic forces, van der Waals, electrostatic and steric interactions between the circulating particle and the endothelium lining the vasculature has been considered.
Abstract: The margination of a particle circulating in the blood stream has been analyzed. The contribution of buoyancy, hemodynamic forces, van der Waals, electrostatic and steric interactions between the circulating particle and the endothelium lining the vasculature has been considered. For practical applications, the contribution of buoyancy, hemodynamic forces and van der Waals interactions should be only taken into account, whilst the effect of electrostatic and steric repulsion becomes important only at very short distances from the endothelium (1–10 nm). The margination speed and the time for margination t s have been estimated as a function of the density of the particle relative to blood Δ ρ, the Hamaker constant A and radius R of the particle. A critical radius R c exists for which the margination time t s has a maximum, which is influenced by both Δ ρ and A: the critical radius decreases as the relative density increases and the Hamaker constant decreases. Therefore, particles used for drug delivery should have a radius smaller than the critical value (in the range of 100 nm) to facilitate margination and interaction with the endothelium. While particles used as nanoharvesting agents in proteomics or genomics analysis should have a radius close to the critical value to minimize margination and increase their circulation time.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive review of the properties of epitaxial 4H silicon carbide polytype (4H-SiC) is presented, with particular emphasis on those aspects of this material related to room, high-temperature and harsh environment ionizing radiation detector operation.
Abstract: We present a comprehensive review of the properties of the epitaxial 4H silicon carbide polytype (4H–SiC). Particular emphasis is placed on those aspects of this material related to room, high-temperature and harsh environment ionizing radiation detector operation. A review of the characterization methods and electrical contacting issues and how these are related to detector performance is presented. The most recent data on charge transport parameters across the Schottky barrier and how these are related to radiation spectrometer performance are presented. Experimental results on pixel detectors having equivalent noise energies of 144 eV FWHM (7.8 electrons rms) and 196 eV FWHM at +27 °C and +100 °C, respectively, are reported. Results of studying the radiation resistance of 4H–SiC are analysed. The data on the ionization energies, capture cross section, deep-level centre concentrations and their plausible structures formed in SiC as a result of irradiation with various particles are reviewed. The emphasis is placed on the study of the 1 MeV neutron irradiation, since these thermal particles seem to play the main role in the detector degradation. An accurate electrical characterization of the induced deep-level centres by means of PICTS technique has allowed one to identify which play the main role in the detector degradation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the detection of high-energy gamma-ray emission from two starburst galaxies using data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.
Abstract: We report the detection of high-energy gamma-ray emission from two starburst galaxies using data obtained with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Steady point-like emission above 200 MeV has been detected at significance levels of 6.8 sigma and 4.8 sigma respectively, from sources positionally coincident with locations of the starburst galaxies M82 and NGC 253. The total fluxes of the sources are consistent with gamma-ray emission originating from the interaction of cosmic rays with local interstellar gas and radiation fields and constitute evidence for a link between massive star formation and gamma-ray emission in star-forming galaxies.
