Abstract: We report a facile particle mediated aggregation protocol to synthesize "sea urchin"-like gold mesoparticles with tailored surface topography via a secondary nucleation and growth process. Surprisingly, these multitip Au mesoparticles are capable of self-assembling into monolayer or multiple layer arrays on Si substrates with a convincing reproducibility and homogeneity over large areas. Raman measurements show that these individual sea urchin-like multitipped gold mesoparticles exhibit a high enhancement of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In addition, the sea urchin-like mesoparticle arrays display a further enhancement of SERS by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude over the individual mesoparticle due to the formation of additional hot spots between the particles. The current protocol stands out as a potentially interesting approach for the fabrication of technologically important SERS-based sensors.

Abstract: In this paper the possibility of designing an OFDM system for simultaneous radar and communications operations is discussed. A novel approach to OFDM radar processing is introduced that overcomes the typical drawbacks of correlation based processing. A suitable OFDM system parameterization for operation at 24 GHz is derived that fulfills the requirements for both applications. The operability of the proposed system concept is verified with MatLab simulations. Keywords-OFDM; Radar, Communications

Abstract: The glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane protein CD24 functions as an adhesion molecule for P-selectin and L1 and plays a role in B-cell development and neurogenesis. Over the last few years, a large body of literature has also implicated CD24 expression in tumorigenesis and progression. Here, we show that ectopic CD24 expression can be sufficient to promote tumor metastasis in experimental animals. By developing a doxycycline-inducible system for the expression of CD24 in breast cancer cells, we have also analyzed the cellular properties that CD24 expression influences. We found that CD24 expression increased tumor cell proliferation. Furthermore, in addition to promoting binding to P-selectin, CD24 expression also indirectly stimulated cell adhesion to fibronectin, collagens I and IV, and laminin through the activation of α 3 β 1 and α 4 β 1 integrin activity. Moreover, CD24 expression supported rapid cell spreading and strongly induced cell motility and invasion. CD24-induced proliferation and motility were integrin independent. Together, these observations implicate CD24 in the regulation of multiple cell properties of direct relevance to tumor growth and metastasis.

Abstract: Exceptional thickening of continental crust beneath the Central Andes is believed to be mainly a result of tectonic shortening of the South American plate in Neogene time. This shortening has been estimated to have contributed as much as 70%–80% of the present crustal volume. A compilation of published shortening values and our own estimates based on balanced cross sections from the Central Andes between lat 3°S and 40°S suggest that 70%–80% is a maximum rather than an average value for this part of the Andes. Tectonic shortening and the crustal cross-section area are only loosely correlated. Variations in tectonic shortening are more abrupt than those of crustal areas, particularly near the northern and southern ends of the Altiplano-Puna high plateau, where thick crust is associated with relatively small amounts of shortening. Shortening there may account for no more than about 30% of the present crustal cross-section area. The processes that created the remaining crustal area are not clear, but are likely to involve poorly constrained pre-Neogene tectonic shortening, moderate magmatic additions to the crust, tectonic underplating of material derived from the forearc, and possible flow of ductile lower crust along strike.
