TL;DR: Domain decomposition methods for solving the coupled Stokes–Darcy system with the Beavers–Joseph interface condition with convergence demonstrated are proposed and analyzed.
Abstract: Domain decomposition methods for solving the coupled Stokes–Darcy system with the Beavers–Joseph interface condition are proposed and analyzed. Robin boundary conditions are used to decouple the Stokes and Darcy parts of the system. Then, parallel and serial domain decomposition methods are constructed based on the two decoupled sub-problems. Convergence of the two methods is demonstrated and the results of computational experiments are presented to illustrate the convergence.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the freeze-drying process under various operational policies through the use of a sorption-sublimation model and showed that the criterion used in terminating the freeze drying process is of extreme importance since it may lead to an undesirable water profile which may deteriorate the quality of the dried product.
Abstract: The freeze-drying process is studied under various operational policies through the use of a sorption-sublimation model. The operational policy that provides the shortest drying times keeps the pressure at its lowest value. The upper and lower heating plates are independently controlled so that the material constraints are encountered and held throughout the free water removal phase. Under certain conditions, and for the case of samples of small thickness, the sorbed water profiles may have segments whose bound water concentrations are higher than those at the start of the free water removal phase. It is shown that the criterion used in terminating the freeze-drying process is of extreme importance, since it may lead to an undesirable sorbed water profile which may deteriorate the quality of the dried product.

TL;DR: In this article, the mechanical properties of hot pressed zirconium diboride-silicon carbide-boron carbide (ZrB2-SiC-B4C) ceramics were characterized from room temperature up to 2200°C in an argon atmosphere.
Abstract: The mechanical properties of hot pressed zirconium diboride–silicon carbide–boron carbide (ZrB2–SiC–B4C) ceramics were characterized from room temperature up to 2200 °C in an argon atmosphere. The average ZrB2 grain size was 3.0 μm. The SiC particles segregated into clusters, and the largest clusters were >30 μm in diameter. The room temperature flexural strength was 700 MPa, decreasing to 540 MPa at 1800 °C and to 260 MPa at 2200 °C. The strength was controlled by the SiC cluster size up to 1800 °C. At higher temperatures, strength was controlled by formation of liquid phases, and precipitation of large BN and B–O–C–N inclusions. The mechanical behavior of these materials changes at ∼1800 °C, meaning that extrapolation of properties from lower temperatures is not accurate. Mechanical behavior in the ultra-high temperature regime was dominated by impurities and changes in microstructure. Therefore, the use of higher purity materials could lead to significant improvements in ultra-high temperature strength.

TL;DR: Results indicate that both groups of 13-93 bioactive glass scaffolds could potentially be used to repair large bone defects, but scaffolds with the oriented microstructure could also be considered for the repair of loaded bone.
