TL;DR: The Co7Se8 bifunctional catalyst enabled water electrolysis in alkaline solution at a cell voltage of 1.6 V and shows unprecedented catalytic performance especially with the patterned growth of catalyst rods and tubes.
Abstract: Electrodeposited Co7Se8 nanostructures exhibiting flake-like morphology show bifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER and HER, respectively) in alkaline medium with long-term durability (>12 h) and high Faradaic efficiency (99.62%). In addition to low Tafel slope (32.6 mV per decade), the Co7Se8 OER electrocatalyst also exhibited very low overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm–2 (0.26 V) which is lower than other transition metal chalcogenide based OER electrocatalysts reported in the literature and significantly lower than the state-of-the-art precious metal oxides. A low Tafel slope (59.1 mV per decade) was also obtained for the HER catalytic activity in alkaline electrolyte. The OER catalytic activity could be further improved by creating arrays of 3-dimensional rod-like and tubular structures of Co7Se8 through confined electrodeposition on lithographically patterned nanoelectrodes. Such arrays of patterned nanostructures produced exceptionally high mass acti...

TL;DR: The transformation of an existing set of heterogeneous product knowledge into a coherent design repository that supports product design knowledge archival and web-based search, display, and design model and tool generation is described.
Abstract: This paper describes the transformation of an existing set of heterogeneous product knowledge into a coherent design repository that supports product design knowledge archival and web-based search, display, and design model and tool generation. Guided by design theory, existing product information was analyzed and compared against desired outputs to ascertain what information management structure was needed to produce design resources pertinent to the design process. Several test products were catalogued to determine what information was essential without being redundant in representation. This set allowed for the creation of a novel single point of entry application for product information and the development of a relational database for design knowledge archival. Web services were then implemented to support design knowledge retrieval through search, browse, and real-time design tool generation. Further explored in this paper are the fundamental enabling technologies of the design repository system. Additionally, repository-generated design tools are scrutinized alongside human-generated design tools for validation. Through this process researchers have been able to improve the way in which artifact data are gathered, archived, distributed and used.

TL;DR: In this article, the synthesis of monolithic highly porous (70% v/v) SiC by carbothermal reduction (1200−1600 °C) of 3D sol−gel silica nanostructures (aerogels) conformally coated and cross-linked with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is described.
Abstract: SiC retains high mechanical strength and oxidation stability at temperatures above 1500 °C, representing a viable alternative to silica, alumina, and carbon, which have been in use as catalyst supports for more than 60 years. Preparation of monolithic porous SiC is usually elaborate and porosities around 30% v/v are typically considered high. This report describes the synthesis of monolithic highly porous (70% v/v) SiC by carbothermal reduction (1200−1600 °C) of 3D sol−gel silica nanostructures (aerogels) conformally coated and cross-linked with polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Synthesis of PAN-cross-linked silica aerogels is carried out in one pot by simple mixing of the monomers, whereas conversion to SiC is carried out in a tube reactor by programmed heating. Intermediates after aromatization (225 °C in air) and carbonization (800 °C under Ar) were isolated and characterized for their chemical composition and materials properties. Data are interpreted mechanistically and were used iteratively for process optim...
