Abstract: A new and generic strategy to construct interwoven carbon nanotube (CNT) branches on various metal oxide nanostructure arrays (exemplified by V2 O3 nanoflakes, Co3 O4 nanowires, Co3 O4 -CoTiO3 composite nanotubes, and ZnO microrods), in order to enhance their electrochemical performance, is demonstrated for the first time. In the second part, the V2 O3 /CNTs core/branch composite arrays as the host for Na(+) storage are investigated in detail. This V2 O3 /CNTs hybrid electrode achieves a reversible charge storage capacity of 612 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and outstanding high-rate cycling stability (a capacity retention of 100% after 6000 cycles at 2 A g(-1) , and 70% after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g(-1) ). Kinetics analysis reveals that the Na(+) storage is a pseudocapacitive dominating process and the CNTs improve the levels of pseudocapacitive energy by providing a conductive network.

Abstract: Previously, it has been reported that human telomeric DNA sequences could adopt in different experimental conditions four different intramolecular G-quadruplexes each involving three G-tetrad layers, namely, Na+ solution antiparallel-stranded basket form, K+ crystal parallel-stranded propeller form, K+ solution (3 + 1) Form 1, and K+ solution (3 + 1) Form 2. Here we present a new intramolecular G-quadruplex adopted by a four-repeat human telomeric sequence in K+ solution (Form 3). This structure is a basket-type G-quadruplex with only two G-tetrad layers: loops are successively edgewise, diagonal, and edgewise; glycosidic conformations of guanines are syn•syn•anti•anti around each tetrad. Each strand of the core has both a parallel and an antiparallel adjacent strands; there are one narrow, one wide, and two medium grooves. Abstract: Ti3C2 MXene is a new two-dimensional material exhibiting a variety of novel properties including good photothermal effect, and the capability of Ti3C2 for multimodal tumor therapy is in urgent need of development. Herein, ultrathin Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets (∼100 nm) have been synthesized by supplying additive Al3+ to avoid Al loss and employed as a photothermal/photodynamic agent for cancer therapy. The as-obtained nanosheets exhibit outstanding mass extinction coefficient (28.6 Lg–1 cm–1 at 808 nm), superior photothermal conversion efficiency (∼58.3%), and effective singlet oxygen generation (1O2) upon 808 nm laser irradiation. Based on these Ti3C2 nanosheets, a multifunctional nanoplatform (Ti3C2-DOX) is established via layer-by-layer surface modification with doxorubicin (DOX) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Abstract: In this paper, a review of the present status of the research and technological development in the field of superhard nanocomposite coatings is attempted. Various deposition techniques have been used to prepare nanocomposite coatings. Among them, reactive magnetron sputtering is most commonly used. Nanocomposite coating design methodology and synthesis are described with emphasis on the magnetron sputtering deposition technique. Also discussed are the hardness and fracture toughness measurements of the coatings and the size effect. Superhard nanocomposite thin films are obtainable through optimal design of microstructure. So far, much attention is paid to increasing hardness, but not enough to toughness. The development of next generation superhard coatings should base on appropriate material design to achieve high hardness and at the same time high toughness.
