TL;DR: This research demonstrates that the LEM, together with the proposed generic line-segment Hausdorff distance measure, provides a new method for face coding and recognition.
Abstract: The automatic recognition of human faces presents a significant challenge to the pattern recognition research community. Typically, human faces are very similar in structure with minor differences from person to person. They are actually within one class of "human face". Furthermore, lighting conditions change, while facial expressions and pose variations further complicate the face recognition task as one of the difficult problems in pattern analysis. This paper proposes a novel concept: namely, that faces can be recognized using a line edge map (LEM). The LEM, a compact face feature, is generated for face coding and recognition. A thorough investigation of the proposed concept is conducted which covers all aspects of human face recognition, i.e. face recognition under (1) controlled/ideal conditions and size variations, (2) varying lighting conditions, (3) varying facial expressions, and (4) varying pose. The system performance is also compared with the eigenface method, one of the best face recognition techniques, and with reported experimental results of other methods. A face pre-filtering technique is proposed to speed up the search process. It is a very encouraging to find that the proposed face recognition technique has performed better than the eigenface method in most of the comparison experiments. This research demonstrates that the LEM, together with the proposed generic line-segment Hausdorff distance measure, provides a new method for face coding and recognition.

TL;DR: This review is devoted to the recent progress in the fabrication of innovative 2D structures with various synthetic strategies and their applications for lithium storage in lithium-ion batteries.
Abstract: Two dimensional nanoarchitectures are of great interest in lithium storage for energy-storage devices, in particular lithium-ion batteries, due to its shortened paths for fast lithium ion diffusion and large exposed surface offering more lithium-insertion channels. Their competitive lithium-storage features provide huge potentials to develop next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries. This review is devoted to the recent progress in the fabrication of innovative 2D structures with various synthetic strategies and their applications for lithium storage in lithium-ion batteries. These 2D architectures are categorized into six styles, i.e., nanoporous nanosheets, ultrathin nanosheets, flower-like structures assembled by nanosheets, sandwich-like nanosheets, corrugated nanosheets, and nanosheets with specific facets. Based on the lithium-storage manner, we further summerized their electrochemical performance for lithium storage with four classified themes including surface Li storage, zero or low-strain Li storage, volume-variation Li storage and synergic-effect Li storage. Finally, the outlook and perspective on 2D lithium-storage materials is concisely provided.

TL;DR: SnO(2) nanoboxes with uniform morphology, good structural stability, and tunable interior volume can be facilely synthesized by template-engaged coordinating etching of pregrown Cu( 2)O nanocubes at room temperature.
Abstract: SnO2 nanoboxes with uniform morphology, good structural stability, and tunable interior volume can be facilely synthesized by template-engaged coordinating etching of pregrown Cu2O nanocubes at room temperature. When evaluated for their lithium storage properties, these SnO2 nanoboxes manifest improved capacity retention.

TL;DR: Using gnotobiotic techniques, strains of Klebsiella spp.
Abstract: Intestinal colonization by bacteria of oral origin has been correlated with several negative health outcomes, including inflammatory bowel disease. However, a causal role of oral bacteria ectopically colonizing the intestine remains unclear. Using gnotobiotic techniques, we show that strains of Klebsiella spp. isolated from the salivary microbiota are strong inducers of T helper 1 (TH1) cells when they colonize in the gut. These Klebsiella strains are resistant to multiple antibiotics, tend to colonize when the intestinal microbiota is dysbiotic, and elicit a severe gut inflammation in the context of a genetically susceptible host. Our findings suggest that the oral cavity may serve as a reservoir for potential intestinal pathobionts that can exacerbate intestinal disease.
