Abstract: The need for supporting student writing has received much attention in writing research. One specific type of support is feedback—including peer feedback—on the writing process. Despite the wealth of literature on both feedback and academic writing, there is little empirical evidence on what type of feedback best promotes writing in online environments. This article reports on research that tries to determine what type of feedback best improves the quality of collaborative writing and what the effects of feedback are on student learning in an environment based on asynchronous written communication. The results reveal that concerning the type of feedback, epistemic feedback or epistemic and suggestive feedback best improve the quality of collaborative writing performance. The nature of the feedback-giver (whether teacher feedback or teacher and peer) makes a difference to the final text only when the feedback is epistemic, or epistemic and suggestive.

Abstract: Due to the ever increasing data traffic demands, which are directly connected to increased energy consumption, it becomes challenging for operators to achieve capacity enhancement while limiting their electric bill. To that end, exploiting the context awareness of future cognitive networks is expected to play a key role. Next generation cellular networks are about to include a plethora of small cells, with users being able to communicate via multiple bands. Given that small cells are expected to be eventually as close as 50 m apart, not all of them will have a direct connection to the core network; thus, multihop communication through neighboring small cells may be required. In such architectures, the user association problem becomes challenging, with backhaul energy consumption being a definitive parameter. Thus, in this article, we study the user association problem in cognitive heterogeneous networks. We evaluate the existing approaches in terms of energy efficiency and show the potential of exploiting the available context-aware information (i.e., users' measurements and requirements, knowledge of the network architecture, and the available spectrum resources of each base station) to associate the users in an energy-efficient way, while maintaining high spectrum efficiency. Our study considers both the access network and backhaul energy consumption, while the performance of the association algorithms is evaluated under two different case study scenarios.

Abstract: Women are underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers, and this poses new challenges at the dawn of the era of digital transformation. The goal of the present study is to demonstrate how female role models influence girls' preferences for STEM studies. This paper evaluates a role-model intervention in which female volunteers working in STEM go into schools to talk to girls about their careers. The study was conducted with 304 girls, from 12 years old (sixth primary grade) to 16 years old (fourth secondary grade), both before and after the role-model sessions. An adaptation of the expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation is used to test the extent to which this role-model intervention improves girls' beliefs that they can be successful in STEM fields and increases their likelihood of choosing a STEM career. The results of multigroup structural equation modeling analysis show that on average, the role-model intervention has a positive and significant effect on mathematics enjoyment, importance attached to math, expectations of success in math, and girls' aspirations in STEM, and a negative effect on gender stereotypes. Additionally, the female role-model sessions significantly increase the positive impact of expectations of success on STEM choices. Finally, the moderation role of the counterstereotypical content of the role-model sessions is tested. The results show that the higher the counterstereotypical character of the sessions, the higher the relationship between expectations of success in math and the choice of STEM. These results are discussed regarding their implications for long-term STEM engagement.

Abstract: Dans le champ de la linguistique appliquee, le concept de locuteur natif est reconnu comme problematique depuis plusieurs decennies. Sa problematisation est neanmoins plus recente dans d’autres sous-champs des sciences du langage – comme celui des langues minoritaires et de la revitalisation des langues, auquel nous nous interessons plus particulierement dans cet article. Les chercheurs qui travaillent sur les langues de communautes minoritaires, comme l’irlandais, le basque, le gallois, le corse, etc., et les processus de changement linguistique et de revitalisation qui leur sont associes, ont dans l’ensemble eu tendance a privilegier l’etude des communautes «natives » . Une attention bien moindre a ete portee au locuteur «non natif » , ou a celui que nous appelons ici «neolocuteur » . Nous examinons les raisons de cette situation, et en quoi le traitement du «natif » dans ce sous-champ disciplinaire correspond aux debats epistemologiques plus larges autour du concept de «locuteur natif » en linguistique appliquee et dans les sciences du langage en general.

Abstract: To meet the ever-increasing traffic demands, future cellular networks are about to include a plethora of small cells (SCs), with user equipments (UEs) being able of communicating via multiple bands. Given that SCs are expected to be eventually as close as 50 m apart, some of them will not have a direct connection to the core network, and thus will forward their traffic to the neighboring SCs until they reach it. In such architectures, the user association problem becomes challenging with backhaul (BH) energy consumption playing a key role. Thus, in this paper, we study the user association problem aiming at maximizing the network energy efficiency. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem, which is NP-hard. Therefore, we propose a cognitive heuristic algorithm that exploits context-aware information (i.e., UE measurements and requirements, the HetNet architecture knowledge and the available spectrum resources of each base station (BS)) to associate the UEs in an energy-efficient way, while considering both the access and the BH energy consumption. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm under two study-case scenarios and we prove that it achieves significantly higher energy efficiency than the reference algorithms, while maintaining high spectral efficiency.
