Abstract: Environmental heterogeneity is among the most important factors governing community structure. Besides the widespread evidence supporting positive relationships between richness and environmental heterogeneity, negative and unimodal relationships have also been reported. However, few studies have attempted to test the role of the heterogeneity on species richness after removing the confounding effect of resource availability or environmental severity. Here we constructed an individual-based spatially explicit model incorporating a long-recognized tradeoff between competitive ability and stress-tolerance ability of species. We explored the impact of the level of resource availability (i.e. the position of the community along a gradient of environmental severity) on the heterogeneity-diversity relationship (HDR). The results indicate that the shape of HDR depends on the community position along the environmental gradient: at either end of the gradient of environmental severity, a positive HDR occurred, whereas at the intermediate levels of the gradient, a unimodal HDR emerged. Our exploration demonstrates that resource availability/environmental severity should be considered as a potential factor influencing the shape of the HDR. Our theoretical predictions represent hypotheses in need of further empirical study.

Abstract: Genetic distances (GDs) based on morphological characters, isozymes and storage proteins, and random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPD) were used to predict the performance and heterosis of crosses in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). Six male-sterile lines carrying the widely used Shaan2A cytoplasm were crossed with five restorer lines to produce 30 F1 hybrids. These 30 hybrids and their parents were evaluated for seven agronomically important traits and their mid-parent heterosis (MPH) at Yangling, Shaanxi province in Northwest China for 2 years. Genetic similarity among the parents based on 34 isozyme and seven protein markers was higher than that based on 136 RAPDs and/or 48 morphological markers. No significant correlation was detected among these three sets of data. Associations between the different estimates of GDs and F1 performance for some agronomic traits were significant, but not for seed yield. In order to enhance the predicting efficiency, we selected 114 significant markers and 43 favoring markers following statistical comparison of the mean values of the yield components between the heterozygous group (where the marker is present only in one parent of each hybrid) and the homozygous group (where the marker is either present or absent in both parents of each hybrid) of the 30 hybrids. Parental GD based on total polymorphic markers (GDtotal, indicating general heterozygosity), significant markers (GDsign, indicating specific heterozygosity) and favoring markers (GDfavor, indicating favoring-marker heterozygosity) were calculated. The correlation between GDfavor or GDsign and hybrid performance was higher than the correlation between GDtotal and hybrid performance. GDsign and GDfavor significantly correlated with plant height, seeds per silique and seed yield, but not with the MPH of the other six agronomic traits with the exception of plant height. The information obtained in this study on the genetic diversity of the parental lines does not appear to be reliable for predicting F1 yield and heterosis.

Abstract: Using the RAdial Velocity Experiment fourth data release (RAVE DR4), and a new metallicity calibration that will be also taken into account in the future RAVE DR5, we investigate the existence and the properties of supersolar metallicity stars ([M/H] ≳ +0.1 dex) in the sample, and in particular in the solar neighbourhood. We find that RAVE is rich in supersolar metallicity stars, and that the local metallicity distribution function declines remarkably slowly up to +0.4 dex. Our results show that the kinematics and height distributions of the supersolar metallicity stars are identical to those of the [M/H] ≲ 0 thin-disc giants that we presume were locally manufactured. The eccentricities of the supersolar metallicity stars indicate that half of them are on a roughly circular orbit (e ≤ 0.15), so under the assumption that the metallicity of the interstellar medium at a given radius never decreases with time, they must have increased their angular momenta by scattering at corotation resonances of spiral arms from regions far inside the solar annulus. The likelihood that a star will migrate radially does not seem to decrease significantly with increasing amplitude of vertical oscillations within range of oscillation amplitudes encountered in the disc.

Abstract: The timeline or track of any individual, mobile, sentient organism, whether animal or human being, represents a fundamental building block in understanding the interactions of such entities with their environment and with each other. New technologies have emerged to capture the (x, y, t) dimension of such timelines in large volumes and at relatively low cost, with various degrees of precision and with different sampling properties. This has proved a catalyst to research on data mining and visualizing such movement fields. However, a good proportion of this research can only infer, implicitly or explicitly, the activity of the individual at any point in time. This paper in contrast focuses on a data set in which activity is known. It uses this to explore ways to visualize large movement fields of individuals, using activity as the prime referential dimension for investigating space-time patterns. Visually central to the paper is the ringmap, a representation of cyclic time and activity, that is itself quasi spatial and is directly linked to a variety of visualizations of other dimensions and representations of spatio-temporal activity. Conceptuatly central is the ability to explore different levels of generalization in each of the space, time and activity dimensions, and to do this in any combination of the (s, t, a) phenomena. The fundamental tenet for this approach is that activity drives movement, and logically it is the key to comprehending pattern. The paper discusses these issues, illustrates the approach with specific example visualizations and invites critiques of the progress to date.
