TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of government-linked investment companies (GLICs), linearity of GLICs, board ownership, and linearity in the linearity effect of board ownership on company performance were examined using weighted least square models.
Abstract: – This study aims to examine the effects of corporate ownership (government-linked investment companies, GLICs), linearity of GLICs, board ownership and linearity of board ownership on company performance. , – Using panel data from companies that are listed on the Malaysian Stock Exchange during the period of 2000 to 2009, this study uses weighted least square models. , – The results show that GLICs ownership is positively and significantly related to company performance, while board ownership is negatively and significantly related to company performance. These findings suggest that GLICs ownership improves company performance, while board ownership destroys company performance. The results also show that while GLICs ownership has an inverted U-shaped relationship with company performance, board ownership has a U-shaped relationship with company performance. , – The theoretical implication of this study is that agency problem decreases in companies with low and high levels of board ownership concentration, while it increases in companies with middle level of board ownership concentration. Furthermore, agency cost decreases in companies with a certain level of GLICs ownership concentration as the government’s New Economic Model (NEM) expects. However, agency cost increases in companies after a certain level of GLICs ownership concentration. , – In practical perspectives, this study provides evidence to policy makers that the government’s proposal to reduce GLICs’ investments in Malaysia and diversify them aboard as mentioned in NEM is supported because the decrease in GLICs stakes in certain level may increase company performance. On the other hand, if the policy of the government is to increase GLICs stakes, the company performance may decrease after a certain level of ownership concentration. This study also provides evidence that investors can invest in companies with low and high board ownership concentration. Furthermore, the NEM policy gives investors an opportunity to invest in the companies with GLICs. Reducing GLICs stakes in the Malaysian market and putting them in the international markets, as mentioned in the Malaysian Government’s NEM policy, will create more opportunities for international investors to invest their fund in the Malaysian market. Thus, the emerging markets exist. In addition, the NEM policy also encourages institutional ownerships like domestic and foreign to increase their stakes instead of GLICs in the Malaysian market. , – So far, most of the previous studies on GLICs and board ownerships in the Malaysian setting focused on the relationship of the ownership structure with company performance. However, no study has been done to examine the linearity effects of GLICs and board ownerships on company performance. The study is very important to perform to provide the policy makers and investors with clear guidance before their decisions.

TL;DR: In this article, the DBUS learning model becomes a way to integrate the value of science and religion in developing students' abilities to learn constructively and meaningfully so they can develop critical-thinking skills and personal religious beliefs.
Abstract: The recent value integration of science and religion has become a topic of research in Indonesia, especially in developing critical-thinking skills and students’ personal religious belief. The purpose of this research is to see the results of the implementation of the DBUS (Discovery-Based Unity of Sciences) learning model analyzed in detail at each step of the learning. This research uses a qualitative approach with interactive analysis of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research sample was 101 students and two biology lecturers from UIN Walisongo Semarang, 94 students and two biology lecturers from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The results of the analysis of this research show that, by implementing the DBUS learning model, students learn constructively, meaningfully, and can apply each syntax in the learning process to develop critical-thinking skills and students’ personal religious beliefs. The DBUS learning model becomes a way to integrate the value of science and religion in developing students' abilities to learn constructively and meaningfully so they can develop critical-thinking skills and personal religious beliefs (PRB).

TL;DR: The ELM method is applied to a meandering valve-based MR damper for damping force prediction, which has been recently developed and has comparable average accuracies with R2 values of more than 0.95, and ELM has shown less value R2 standard deviation showing its advantage to reduce the possibility of being trapped in local solution compared to the conventional ANN.
Abstract: The application of artificial neural network (ANN) models in magnetorheological (MR) damper has gained interest in various studies because of the high accuracy in predicting the damping force, especially for control purposes. However, the existing neural network models have apparent drawbacks such as relatively long training time and the possibility to be trapped in local solutions. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a new method to deal with a highly nonlinear behavior of MR damper using an extreme learning machine (ELM) method. The ELM method is applied to a meandering valve-based MR damper for damping force prediction, which has been recently developed. A simulation scheme is selected with damping force as the output, and current, velocity, and displacement as the inputs. The simulations are then carried out based on fatigue dynamic tests data in various frequencies and currents. The training times for more than nineteen thousand data points using the ELM method with 10, 100, 1000 hidden neuron numbers are less than 1.70 s, which is faster than the conventional ANN. Based on 50 times training processes, the ELM and ANN models have comparable average accuracies with R2 values of more than 0.95. ELM also has shown less value R2 standard deviation showing its advantage to reduce the possibility of being trapped in local solution compared to the conventional ANN.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors formulated the community empowerment model in health in the Village Preparedness program in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, Java, Indonesia, using survey and case study.
Abstract: Sejak tahun 2006, Departemen Kesehatan meluncurkan kebijakan program Desa Siaga. Kata kunci: Desa siaga, kebijakan, pemberdayaan masyarakat Abstract Since 2006, the Health Department had launched the Village Preparedness program policy. But, this policy apparently not capable of empowering the community in identifying and solving the health problem at community (village) level. The objective of research is to formulate the community empowerment model in health in the Village Preparedness program. The targets of research were the Village Health Forum and Village Health Post in 30 Village Preparedness in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. The method involving survey and case study. The case study showed factors related to community capability of identifying health problem and community capability of solving the health problems. The community empowerment model in health including the capabilities of identifying and of solving the health problems. The community internal and external factors at members of community level, community institution, community leadership, and information access played important role in community empowerment in health. TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider peer-fighting between lower middle-class Javanese schoolboys with a view to describing the masculine habitus referenced in local collective violence.
Abstract: This article considers peer fighting between lower middle-class Javanese schoolboys with a view to describing the masculine habitus referenced in local collective violence. Acknowledging the long history of heroic warfare and factionalism in Java, the data points to the pleasurable sense of oneself as a kind of warrior fighting with a band of brothers. Four important points emerge about contemporary youthful masculinities here. First, peer fighting is a temporally bounded activity that ends with the school-to-work transition, thus bearing out Messerschmidt's argument. Second, alcohol plays an important role in amplifying peer conflicts and honor disputes. Third, getting a girlfriend demands the expression of a different kind of masculine habitus from that operationalized in peer fighting. Finally, Muslim school-boy youth squads (geng[s]) are intense formations for the construction of warrior masculinities, employing extensive imagery from the field of global Islamist struggle in battles with boys from secular and Christian schools.
