Abstract: We investigate the problem of achieving global optimization for distributed channel selections in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), using game theoretic solutions. To cope with the lack of centralized control and local influences, we propose two special cases of local interaction game to study this problem. The first is local altruistic game, in which each user considers the payoffs of itself as well as its neighbors rather than considering itself only. The second is local congestion game, in which each user minimizes the number of competing neighbors. It is shown that with the proposed games, global optimization is achieved with local information. Specifically, the local altruistic game maximizes the network throughput and the local congestion game minimizes the network collision level. Also, the concurrent spatial adaptive play (C-SAP), which is an extension of the existing spatial adaptive play (SAP), is proposed to achieve the global optimum both autonomously as well as rapidly.

Abstract: Today the Internet plays a role in the lives of nearly 40% of the world's population, and it is becoming increasingly entwined in daily life. This growing presence is transforming psychological science in terms of the topics studied and the methods used. We provide an overview of the literature, considering three broad domains of research: translational (implementing traditional methods online; e.g., surveys), phenomenological (topics spawned or mediated by the Internet; e.g., cyberbullying), and novel (new ways to study existing topics; e.g., rumors). We discuss issues (e.g., sampling, ethics) that arise when doing research online and point to emerging opportunities (e.g., smartphone sensing). Psychological research on the Internet comes with new challenges, but the opportunities far outweigh the costs. Abstract: General deviation measures are introduced and studied systematically for their potential applications to risk management in areas like portfolio optimization and engineering. Such measures include standard deviation as a special case but need not be symmetric with respect to ups and downs. Their properties are explored with a mind to generating a large assortment of examples and assessing which may exhibit superior behavior. Connections are shown with coherent risk measures in the sense of Artzner, Delbaen, Eber and Heath, when those are applied to the difference between a random variable and its expectation, instead of to the random variable itself. However, the correspondence is only one-to-one when both classes are restricted by properties called lower range dominance, on the one hand, and strict expectation boundedness on the other. Dual characterizations in terms of sets called risk envelopes are fully provided.
