TL;DR: The results indicate that shallow marine waters covered the region at least twice during the Miocene, but the events were short-lived, rather than a continuous full-marine occupancy of Amazonian landscape over millions of years.
Abstract: There is a considerable controversy about whether western Amazonia was ever covered by marine waters during the Miocene [23 to 5 Ma (million years ago)]. We investigated the possible occurrence of Miocene marine incursions in the Llanos and Amazonas/Solimoes basins, using sedimentological and palynological data from two sediment cores taken in eastern Colombia and northwestern Brazil together with seismic information. We observed two distinct marine intervals in the Llanos Basin, an early Miocene that lasted ~0.9 My (million years) (18.1 to 17.2 Ma) and a middle Miocene that lasted ~3.7 My (16.1 to 12.4 Ma). These two marine intervals are also seen in Amazonas/Solimoes Basin (northwestern Amazonia) but were much shorter in duration, ~0.2 My (18.0 to 17.8 Ma) and ~0.4 My (14.1 to 13.7 Ma), respectively. Our results indicate that shallow marine waters covered the region at least twice during the Miocene, but the events were short-lived, rather than a continuous full-marine occupancy of Amazonian landscape over millions of years.

TL;DR: A discrete choice model that incorporates thresholds in the perception of attribute changes and considers multiple options and allows changes in several attributes, finding that where perception thresholds exist in the population, the use of models without them leads to errors in estimation and prediction.
Abstract: In this paper we formulate a discrete choice model that incorporates thresholds in the perception of changes in attribute values. The model considers multiple options and allows for changes in several attributes. We postulate that if thresholds exist they could be random, differ between individuals, and even be a function of socio-economic characteristics and choice conditions. Our formulation allows estimation of the parameters of the threshold probability distribution starting from information about choices. The model is applied to synthetic data and also to real data from a stated preference survey. We found that where perception thresholds exist in the population, the use of models without them leads to errors in estimation and prediction. Clearly, the effect is more relevant when the typical size of change in the attribute value is comparable with the threshold, and when the contribution of this attribute in the utility function is substantial. Finally, we discuss the implications of the threshold model for estimation of the benefits of transport investments, and show that where thresholds exist, models that do not represent them can overestimate benefits substantially.

TL;DR: In conclusion, infections with C. trachomatis is an important public health problem, especially in third world and developing countries, and more socio‐economic studies linking secondary prevention of chlamydial infections, infertility and adverse pregnancy outcome are needed to understand more of its aetiology.
Abstract: Summary With approximately 90 million cases annually, infection with Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial disease in the world Considering that these infections are often asymptomatic and cause major complications like acute pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility or infant pneumonia, the estimated costs for diagnosis and treatment in the USA amounts to 22 million US dollars for each 500 cases Therefore, there is a high need for correct, quick and cost-effective diagnosis and treatment of this urogenital tract infection New innovative therapies provide good results with regard to efficacy and patients’ compliance The success rates of treatments are at least 95% However, the occurrence of antibiotic resistance should not be ignored and new treatment schemes must be developed The state-of-the-art of diagnosis and treatment of chlamydial infections as well as the pathophysiology is discussed in this review In conclusion, infections with C trachomatis is an important public health problem, especially in third world and developing countries, and more socio-economic studies linking secondary prevention of chlamydial infections, infertility and adverse pregnancy outcome are needed to understand more of its aetiology In addition, diagnosis and treatment should be improved Data in men revealed that past infections but not present infections are more related to male infertility There is still controversial results In future studies, function of the seminal vesicles and evaluation of the antioxidant capacity should be taken into account when role of C trachomatis infection on male fertility is assessed
