Abstract: We study a general field theory of a scalar field coupled to gravity through a quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term $\ensuremath{\xi}(\ensuremath{\varphi}{)R}_{\mathrm{GB}}^{2}.$ The coupling function has the form $\ensuremath{\xi}(\ensuremath{\varphi})={\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{n},$ where n is a positive integer. In the absence of the Gauss-Bonnet term, the cosmological solutions for an empty universe and a universe dominated by the energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field are always characterized by the occurrence of a true cosmological singularity. By employing analytical and numerical methods, we show that, in the presence of the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term, for the dual case of even n, the set of solutions of the classical equations of motion in a curved FRW background includes singularity-free cosmological solutions. The singular solutions are shown to be confined in a part of the phase space of the theory allowing the non-singular solutions to fill the rest of the space. We conjecture that the same theory with a general coupling function that satisfies certain criteria may lead to non-singular cosmological solutions.

Abstract: Emfietzoglou, D., Cucinotta, F. A. and Nikjoo, H. A Complete Dielectric Response Model for Liquid Water: A Solution of the Bethe Ridge Problem. Radiat. Res. 164, 202–211 (2005). We present a complete yet computationally simple model for the dielectric response function of liquid water over the energy-momentum plane, which, in contrast to earlier models, is consistent with the recent inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy data at both zero and finite momentum transfer values. The model follows Ritchie's extended-Drude algorithm and is particularly effective at the region of the Bethe ridge, substantially improving previous models. The present development allows for a more accurate simulation of the inelastic scattering and energy deposition process of low-energy electrons in liquid water and other biomaterials. Abstract: A search for new resonances decaying to WW, ZZ, or WZ is presented. Final states are considered in which one of the vector bosons decays leptonically and the other hadronically. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb^(−1) recorded in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Techniques aiming at identifying jet substructures are used to analyze signal events in which the hadronization products from the decay of highly boosted W or Z bosons are contained within a single reconstructed jet. Upper limits on the production of generic WW, ZZ, or WZ resonances are set as a function of the resonance mass and width. We increase the sensitivity of the analysis by statistically combining the results of this search with a complementary study of the all-hadronic final state. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the bulk graviton production cross section in the range from 700 to 10 fb for resonance masses between 600 and 2500 GeV, respectively. These limits on the bulk graviton model are the most stringent to date in the diboson final state.

Abstract: Video indexing requires the efficient segmentation of video into scenes. The video is first segmented into shots and a set of key-frames is extracted for each shot. Typical scene detection algorithms incorporate time distance in a shot similarity metric. In the method we propose, to overcome the difficulty of having prior knowledge of the scene duration, the shots are clustered into groups based only on their visual similarity and a label is assigned to each shot according to the group that it belongs to. Then, a sequence alignment algorithm is applied to detect when the pattern of shot labels changes, providing the final scene segmentation result. In this way shot similarity is computed based only on visual features, while ordering of shots is taken into account during sequence alignment. To cluster the shots into groups we propose an improved spectral clustering method that both estimates the number of clusters and employs the fast global k-means algorithm in the clustering stage after the eigenvector computation of the similarity matrix. The same spectral clustering method is applied to extract the key-frames of each shot and numerical experiments indicate that the content of each shot is efficiently summarized using the method we propose herein. Experiments on TV-series and movies also indicate that the proposed scene detection method accurately detects most of the scene boundaries while preserving a good tradeoff between recall and precision.
