Pseudotachylyte controversy: Fact or friction?

Abstract: High-speed slip experiments performed on Westerly granite using friction welding apparatus reveal that comminution is an essential precursor to melting by friction. Observations of slip surfaces via analytical scanning electron microscopy (SEM) document the following sequence of events occurring in 2 s with increasing velocity (up to 2 m/s): fracture; progressive comminution; surface melting of mineral fragments; fragment-to-fragment adhesion; and, finally, production of a fragment-laden, melt-supported suspension. Explosive dehydration and melting of the epidote-group mineral allanite indicates that temperatures of at least 1000 °C were realized at the interface. This is corroborated by calculation of the temperature rise for the known operating conditions. Contrary to earlier proposals, these results show that comminution and frictional melting are complementary and not mutually exclusive processes. Depending on the velocity–shear stress–displacement relations prevailing during frictional slip, rocks produced in seismogenic zones can be predominantly comminuted wall rock or fragment-melt mixes (pseudotachylytes).

Biodegradable polymers and green-based antimicrobial packaging materials: A mini-review

Abstract: Recently, the demands for biodegradable and renewable materials for packaging applications have increased tremendously. This rise in demand is connected to the growing environmental concerns over the extensive use of synthetic and non-biodegradable polymeric packaging, polyethylene in particular. The performance of biodegradable polymers is discussed in this review, with a particular focus on the blends of starch and other polymers. Furthermore, in food packaging industry, microbial activities are of great concern. Therefore, incorporation of antimicrobial agents or polymers to produce barrier-enhanced or active packaging materials provides an attractive option for protecting food from microorganism development and spread. Additionally, the barrier, mechanical and other properties of biodegradable polymers are discussed. Lastly, the existing and potential applications for bioactive coatings on antimicrobial packaging materials are also addressed.

Feminist Grounded Theory: An Exploration of the Congruency and Tensions between Two Traditions in Knowledge Discovery

Abstract: The feminist perspective applied to the method of grounded theory offers an approach to knowledge discovery for nursing that incorporates diversity and change. The epistemological congruency of feminist theory and grounded theory is discussed. Tensions created by the application of feminist methodological features to the grounded theory method are explored and reflexivity suggested as a means of ensuring that both traditions are respected.

Common and specific dimensions of self-reported anxiety and depression: implications for the cognitive and tripartite models.

Abstract: The common and specific symptom dimensions of anxiety and depression proposed by the tripartite (L.A. Clark & D. Watson, 1991 c) and cognitive (A.T. Beck, 1976, 1987) models were investigated in 844 psychiatric outpatients and 420 undergraduates. Principal-factor analyses with oblique rotations performed on the 42 items of the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory for both samples revealed that there were 2 correlated factors. Depression and Anxiety. Second-order factor analyses of the interfactor correlation matrices indicated a large general distress or negative affect factor underlying the relationship between the 2 first-order factors. Specific depression and anxiety dimensions were apparent even after we controlled for negative affect. The results were consistent with both the tripartite and cognitive models, with the cognitive and motivational symptoms specific to depression and the physiological arousal symptoms unique to anxiety.
