Valence Charge Concentrations, Electron Delocalization and β‐Agostic Bonding in d0 Metal Alkyl Complexes

Abstract: In this paper we describe a range of model d(0) metal ethyl compounds and related complexes, studied by DFT calculations and high resolution X-ray diffraction. The concept of ligand-opposed charge concentrations (LOCCs) for d(0) metal complexes is extended to include both cis-and trans-ligand-induced charge concentrations (LICCs) at the metal, which arise as a natural consequence of covalent metal-ligand bond formation in transition metal alkyl complexes. The interplay between locally induced sites of increased Lewis acidity and an ethyl ligand is crucial to the development of a beta-agostic interaction in d(0) metal alkyl complexes, which is driven by delocalization of the M-C bonding electrons. Topological analysis of theoretical and experimental charge densities reveals LICCs at the metal atom, and indicates delocalization of the M-C valence electrons over the alkyl fragment, with depletion of the metal-directed charge concentration (CC) at the alpha-carbon atom, and a characteristic ellipticity profile for the C(alpha)-C(beta) bond. These ellipticity profiles and the magnitude of the CC values at C(alpha) and C(beta) provide experimentally observable criteria for assessing quantitatively the extent of delocalization, with excellent agreement between experiment and theory. Finally, a concept is proposed which promises systematic control of the extent of C-H activation in agostic complexes.

Challenging Stereotypes: Sexual Functioning of Single Adults with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: This study examined the sexual functioning of single adults (61 men, 68 women) with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome living in the community with and without prior relationship experience. Participants completed an on-line questionnaire assessing autism symptoms, psychological functioning, and various aspects of sexual functioning. In general participants reported positive sexual functioning. Participants without prior relationship experience were significantly younger and more likely to be male and identify as heterosexual. They reported significantly higher sexual anxiety, lower sexual arousability, lower dyadic desire, and fewer positive sexual cognitions. The men reported better sexual function than did the women in a number of areas. These results counter negative societal perceptions about the sexuality of high functioning individuals on the autism spectrum.

Health Assimilation Patterns Amongst Australian Immigrants

Abstract: This paper compares the health of Australian immigrants with that of the Australian-born population and examines the extent to which differences vary with time since migration. Health is measured using self-reports of chronic diseases from three national health surveys. Probit models are used to estimate the health effects of immigrant arrival cohorts, years since migration and country of birth. We find that the health of Australian immigrants is better than the Australian-born population, but the longer immigrants spend in Australia, the closer their health approximates that of the Australian-born population. There are variations for different immigrant groups and for particular chronic diseases.
