Abstract: Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and the Pap smear test is one of the most widely accessible forms of cancer screening. An important public health issue is the extent to which Canadian women are engaging in regular screening for cervical cancer, particularly potentially at-risk groups such as recent immigrants and women from minority ethnic backgrounds. We use recent population health surveys to analyze immigrant and native-born women’s use of Pap smear testing, with a focus on how screening rates differ by ethnic background and characteristics of immigration. We find that almost all recent immigrant women have markedly lower use of Pap smear testing than comparable Canadian-born women, but these rates slowly increase with years in Canada. However, we find wide variation in rates of screening by ethnic background. Screening rates for White immigrant women from countries where the official language is neither English nor French approach Canadian-born women’s utilization rates after 15–20 years in Canada, as do the screening rates of Black and Hispanic women. Screening rates for those from Asian backgrounds remain significantly below native-born Canadian levels even after many years in Canada. As well, immigrant women of Asian background who arrived as children and second-generation Asian Canadians both exhibit significantly lower rates of Pap smear testing than Canadian-born White women.

Abstract: Sense-of-place research has grown in recent years and has attracted interest from a diverse range of disciplines. Beckley (2003) suggests that it may be possible to disaggregate persons' attachment to biophysical versus sociocultural aspects of sense of place. Stedman (2003) and Beckley (2003) challenge researchers to experiment with new methods for examining the subject. This research addresses the challenges through the use of resident-employed photography. The method was used to elicit sense-of-place values in four communities across Canada. Participants took photographs of things that most attached them to their communities or region. Participants were interviewed about their photographs, and 937 photo-narrative data points were created and analyzed. The analysis involved ascribing photo-narratives to single response categories. Abstract: The use of sterile, triploid salmon for aquaculture would be an effective method of preventing genetic interactions between cultured and wild salmon. The studies presented in this paper compare the performance of six year classes of triploid and diploid salmon in freshwater and seawater stages of commercial production. Freshwater growth was comparable between triploids and diploids. Freshwater survival was also similar between triploids and diploids except that survival was lower in the triploids for the developmental interval between fertilization and first feeding. In sea water, triploids performed better than diploids in terms of growth. However, survival was lower in triploids and they showed a higher incidence of jaw deformities. In summary, the overall yields of triploids was lower than diploids under culture conditions.

Abstract: Proposed depositional models for Miocene Amazon foreland basin strata (Pebas Formation, Peru) are controversial. Recent depositional models include lacustrine and tidally influenced, brackish-water embayment. This paper presents data that support tidally influenced, brackish-water deposition for at least part of Pebas time (10-14 Ma). Two parasequences are presented (Santa Julia and Tamshiyacu). Both crop out along the Amazon River in Upper Amazonia near Iquitos, Peru. At these locations, abundant evidence of brackish-water, tidally influenced deposition is documented, including marginal marine bioturbation, sedimentary couplets, semidiurnal couplets (preserved in burrows), and pinstripe lamination. The deposits are locally highly bioturbated. At both locations ichnogenera normally associated with marine to brackish-water depositional environments are common. Three normally marginal-marine ichnofabrics are reported: (1) a Chondrites-reburrowed, Planolites ichnofabric resident only in massive-appearing muds; (2) a Scolicia (Laminites), Thalassinoides, Ophiomorpha ichnofabric that is manifested as intensely bioturbated silty sands; and (3) a Thalassinoides-generated ichnofabric that is interpreted to have descended into consolidated substrates and is thus representative of the Glossifungites Ichnofacies. Several trace fossils contain laminated infills organized into distinct sedimentary couplets that are best interpreted as resulting from semidiurnal processes. Six conclusions are arrived at: (1) sedimentological and ichnological data consistently indicate that sediment accumulation dominantly occurred in sporadically dysaerobic, marine to brackish water, under a tidal influence; (2) sediment accumulation occurred in bay-margin environments that prograded into a shallow, quiescent bay; (3) a stratified water column is indicated by the ichnofauna; (4) low accommodation space, repetitive and rapid adjustments of relative sea level, shallow wave base, and a stratified water column combined to generate an atypical parasequence architecture; (5) previously published isotopic data are consistent with sediment accumulation in brackish to marine water; and (6) marine incursion into Amazonia occurred during the Middle Miocene.
